Episode Five

Previously, on Survivor Canada

A subarctic rainstorm tests and punishes the Survivors.  Cree put an end to Paleo's winning streak by taking home a reward which allows them to force Tabatha to sit-out of the immunity challenge.  However, Paleo out-shops Cree and once again deny them immunity.  Two declining players are eliminated:  Dan's rudeness leads to his disqualification, while Mike is voted out 6-1.

CREE, NIGHT 11

Down to six players, Janei takes a solo watch at the campfire that night.  "Mike was the obvious boot, I didn't even talk to anyone about it," Janei says to the camera.  She really likes Staton.  "I hope he sticks around because he has earned it in my book."  She is seeing signs of fatigue in Miriam and Karen but is more worried about how the game is wearing on Aiden, missing the way he used to be.  "I fear he is next to go, and I don't want that."

PALEO, DAY 12

Rick makes a big "Paleo Pride" speech, anticipating a merge or switch and hoping that they will stick together.  "I am 110% Paleo all the way.  We have done such a great job, we have to make sure that one of us wins."  He warns against a "sleeper" from the "lesser tribe" slipping through to win.  "I pledge here and now that I will do whatever I need to do to make sure that a Paleo wins this game."  Rick puts it to the group, giving them the opportunity to swear loyalty.

"I'm with you all the way, I stick by my tribe no matter what," Shane replies.  "I'm 110% on board with this idea."

"Paleo all the way!" Diana chimes in.

Tabatha agrees.  "I am 110% with this Tribe... Paleo all the way!"

"I agree totally, Rick.  We've all worked too hard to let ourselves come apart," Kelley says to the group.  "I am with you guys until the end."

Michelle tells them that she's in too.  "When the merge comes, we'll have to keep in touch and organize our votes.  If we happen to have a tribal shuffle, let's not forget our roots.  Once a Paleo, always a Paleo!!!"

Emmanuel, their designated sacrifice should they have to vote out one of their own, says nothing and nobody really expects him too.  But in all their well-wishes, Jon's silence seems to be unnoticed.  It might not matter as six have signed on to this "Paleo Pride" alliance, which is almost a game majority.

Paleo are so certain that the merge is coming that they cook up the last of their wild rice and whatever else they can forage in one big blow-out "feast" — which is to say a meal slightly above subsistence levels.  They feel that they've timed it perfectly, stretching their food to last just to this point.

CREE, DAY 12

One nice thing about being the smaller tribe is that Cree has had fewer mouths to feed.  The result is that Cree now have 12 more person-days of rice than Paleo, enough to feed their six-member tribe though Day 15.  Cree are aware that a switch or merge may happen at any time, but being outnumbered they'd still prefer a chance to even the numbers first.

"It royally hurts us all to be 2 short," Janei says in a confessional.  "When a merge comes tribal lines play a huge role in who advances and who doesn't.  I came here to try and get as far as I could, if we go into a merge at a disadvantage then I will jump ship as fast as I can.  I'm playing the game."

Staton feels pretty much beaten because of losing all the IC's.  "But I'm not giving up."

PALEO, DAY 12

Paleo anxiously await treemail which will take them to the expected merge.  Diana and Shane agree that the merge is coming, and they have Cree by a lot.  "If we can just get Eman to vote with us."  Shane wishes they had one more immunity win as Paleo, because then they wouldn't need Eman — they'd have a numbers advantage even if Eman switched to Cree's side.  Diana wonders how active the surviving members of Cree are... she'll have to keep her eyes open.

Diana also goes over the numbers with Michelle.  Cree has 6 to Paleo's 8.  "We should have 10!" Michelle complains, grudgingly upset that they are down at all without losing.  Diana counts off their tribemates, and Emmanuel is so absent that Michelle has to remind her about him.

When Michelle suggests there might be a reshuffling of the tribes, Diana exclaims, "Oh my God, that would suck!  That's scary."  She has a feeling that the situation will make it difficult to stick with only your own tribe.  "I have a funny feeling Zoe's got something up her sleeve."

Michelle agrees, although they'd still outnumber Cree.  "If we keep it with the same numbers, we could be in trouble.  If we split up evenly, we're better off."

Meanwhile, Shane discusses with Rick which former Cree they should vote off after the merge.  "I say Staton or Janei be our first target; they seem very active.  You wanna get rid of the strong players first."

Rick is uncertain; ideally, he'd prefer to "lull them into comfort" by helping Cree vote off one of their own they'd already like gone.

PALEO, DAY 13

Another day dawns and still there is no merge.  Paleo's food stores are exhausted and they have to go without any breakfast.  Hunger is a dull and familiar sensation by now, and they aren't suffering too badly.  Worst off is sickly Emmanuel who has been under the weather for much of the game.  A few of them try their hand at fishing but for the most part they hang around camp, conserving their energy.

Although Paleo would like to start voting Cree off, there can only be one Sole Survivor and Paleo will eventually be forced to turn on themselves.  Despite their words of unity, tribemates are not unaware of this fact.

In a confessional Jon says that his alliances haven't changed.  "I plan to stick with Diana.  Right now I've been slacking but I plan on redeeming myself since I see myself in the bottom 2."

Kelley also has an alliance with Diana, "but I would like to branch out and include Tabatha and Jon if they are interested, because they seem to be two of the stronger members of our tribe."

Diana puts a different ally first.  "I think Rick has been tried and true, he's the only one I trust.  I like most of my tribe members for sure, but I trust Rick."

Although Rick talks most with Diana, he doesn't place her among his closest allies.  "I'm still in with Michelle and Shane; nothing changed there."  Rick is trying to play it safe.  "Alliances haven't had to be tested yet in our Tribe.  Not until we face Tribal Council for the first time will we know what our alliances mean to us."

Michelle has similar thoughts.  "Everything could and probably will change once we lose our first immunity challenge.  Everyone knows that's when the game really starts."  Michelle plans to feel out the tribe and how people are aligned.

Shane has alliances with Rick, Michelle and Tabatha.  "Tabby is the one I'm sticking by the most."

Even in her confessional, Tabatha is tight-lipped about her allies.  She does say, "Alliances are great and I plan to stick with one to the end!"  Tabatha decides to try to lie low a bit, so she doesn't make a target of herself after the merge.

REWARD CHALLENGE, DAY 13

"Good morning, Survivors!" Zoe greets the arriving contestants.  "For two weeks you've been competing against each other as tribes.  Today, that is going to change."  There is a bit of excitement from the players, expecting a switch or merge.  They hush as Zoe continues speaking.  "You will be competing for a great mystery reward which one of you will be able to win in 'Riddle Me This'.  The challenge is straight-forward; each of you will have to answer a series of riddles.  The Survivor with the most correct wins!"

"Are you ready... Survivors Go!"

The Survivors uncover the riddles at their tables and most of them get to work.  Eman is still sick from the cold weather, and can't wrap his head around the riddles.  Aiden, Janei and Staton of Cree decide to lie low, deciding that it wouldn't be wise to come out too strong on the challenge since they are outnumbered by Paleo.  Rick also gives only a half-hearted effort, instead keeping an eye on the competition to size them up.

The nine other Survivors are all pretty close, getting stumped on one riddle or another.  Finally, Zoe calls time and checks over their answers.  She lets everyone know how they did.

Rick gets last place with only 6 of 15 riddles correctly solved.
Michelle has 10 correct.
Rob has 11 correct, and was the only Survivor to solve one tricky riddle.
Jon has 12 correct.
Miriam and Karen of Cree each have 13 correct.

And with 14 correct is a first-place tie between Diana, Tabatha, Shane and Kelley.  All four of them are from Paleo.

In a quick tie-breaker, Kelley is declared the winner.

Zoe tells Kelley what her reward is, but keeps it a secret from the other Survivors.

"Congratulations, Kelley!  Great game, Survivors.  You can return to your camps now," Zoe tells them.  There is a little confusion, and Zoe innocently tells them.  "I said that you wouldn't be competing as tribes today, I didn't say anything about a merge.  Be careful making assumptions in this game."

PALEO, DAY 13

Rick and Jon catch up; they always seem to be doing different things and don't get a chance to talk alone.  They speculate on the reward Kelley won.  "I'm thinking it's first member of the jury," Rick suggests, laughing as that would mean Kelley would be out of the running to win.  Jon foresees it being an individual immunity.  However, Rick notes that's a one-time thing rather than something which would impact the rest of the game.  "I'm definitely curious about it," Rick says, enviously.

Rick discusses the same topic with Shane, who thinks it might be an automatic pass to the merge or jury.  Rick congratulates Shane for his first-place tie; they are both impressed that all four top scores were Paleo... though Rick brought up "the end of the train," finishing dead last.

Rick gets a hold of Tabatha, and shares his gossip about Kelley's reward.  Tabatha won't really speculate on it, but she hopes it's something good for Kelley.  Feeling a bit worn-down, Tabatha heads to the shelter for a nap.

CREE, DAY 14

Janei knows the situation is bad but doesn't yet feel beaten.  "Only if we lose all IC's up to the merge will I feel that.  I still think there is hope, I really do.  If we can win this one then it's going to raise all of our spirits."

Miriam feels terrible about being 2 tribemembers short of Paleo.  "I feel beaten because we as a tribe are beating ourselves."

"Our tribe used to have conflicts here and there but they have smoothed out due to one issue:  we keep losing!" Janei laughs.  "At this point, there isn't any need for fighting or anything, we just want to win!!"

PALEO, DAY 14

Two days have passed since Paleo had much of anything to eat, and it's starting to show.  Weakened, they don't like their chances at immunity if it's a physical challenge.

Michelle suggests that Paleo should be more organized, citing how Rick and Kelley had been locked-out of the last immunity challenge — which also would have shut them out of the vote had Paleo lost immunity.  Diana seizes on this and nominates Michelle to be their "team captain" for the next competition, glad to put attention on someone else.

Michelle's idea is to automatically divide the work evenly, to let everyone else know what each person is doing, and to agree on a certain timetable that would allow them to finish-up their tasks.  To be fair, she suggests taking turns being "team captain."

Diana agrees that they all need to communicate more before and during a challenge, especially immunities.

"I'm not all that upset about it," Rick tells them, saying it was a knee-jerk reaction he'd had.  He points out that it has been working well so far, and they should just check before submitting final answers.

Michelle is mostly concerned about the numbers.  "We all want our tribe to make it intact to the merge.  It should be ten on six now, but it isn't."  Michelle doesn't want them slacking off.  "We've come this far without the help of those two people and we can make it much farther without them freeloading on our hard work."

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE, DAY 14

The Survivors are instructed on their fifth immunity challenge, "Survivor Rhymes."  Each tribe must respond to a series of clues with rhymes about tv Survivors.  For example, a Pagong body part = Greg leg.

Since Paleo has two more members than Cree, sickly Eman and (ironically) team captain Michelle are apologetically told that they must sit out of the challenge.  However, even with this, 6 members of Paleo are taking part while only 3 from Cree join in.

Paleo aren't as organized as Michelle might have liked them to be.  Jon and Diana discuss one riddle at length, knowing what the answer must be but unsure if it rhymes.  They wonder if it's the elusive Canadian accent.

Karen, Miriam and Janei do excellent work on the challenge.  It looks like immunity will be a contest between their energy and mental alertness against Paleo's sheer numbers.

Zoe scores the challenge:  44 points for Paleo and 30 points for Cree.

"Congratulations Paleo on another win!  Great work everyone!  Cree, sorry to say it, guys... it's another Tribal Council for you."

CREE, DAY 14

Cree are uneasy, both about the lack of participation in the immunity challenge and the prospects of tribal council.

"I have no actual alliances," Miriam hedges, "but I trust Aiden and Staton and no-one else."

Janei believes that this could be an interesting tribal council.  "I have a feeling that Miriam has aligned herself with Staton who is probably aligned to Aiden.  For me, I was asked to join Karen and Rob's alliance.  We could have a 3-3 tie."  Janei decides, "It's time to put Aiden on the chopping block.  He's the weakest member out here and for all we know, he will get a self-vote."

TRIBAL COUNCIL, DAY 14

Once again, Cree find themselves at Tribal Council.  They haven't missed a single TC of the game.  Knowing the drill, they put in their votes and wait as Zoe counts them.

NORTHERN ONTARIO, NIGHT 14

As Cree hike back to camp by torchlight, they are preyed upon by hungry mosquitoes.  Rob complains to his tribemates about them; he blames them for why he's been so tired lately, why he lacked the energy to take part in the last immunity challenge.  Rob suggests that the mosquitoes carry the deadly West Nile virus, causing unnecessary anxiety amongst the Cree tribe.

Anxious to get some smoke going to keep the mosquitoes away, Cree speed their pace as they come closer to their camp.  To their surprise, they find that they are not alone — there is shadowy movement of a hunched figure rummaging through their camp's kitchen area.

Knowing that Paleo are hungry and irritated at how the competing tribe has "cheated" them the whole game, ill-tempered Rob tosses his torch at a production technician who tries to stop him.  Cursing up a storm, he charges into camp to nab the bent-over trespasser, grabbing a handful of shaggy hair.  The scavenging thief makes a surprised noise around a mouthful of food and turns, swatting Rob with a huge, powerful limb.

Knocked on his ass, Rob can see in the torchlight of his tribemates a black bear standing over him.  It's a young one — only 100 kilos — but it's lean and muscled, thick black fur with a brownish muzzle.  Threatened by Rob, it bellows and rears up in a show of intimidation.

Some of Rob's tribemates cry out, or yell back or wave their torches to try to scare the bear.  Under that Pandemonium is a controlled scrape and click of a .303 cartridge being chambered.  Then everyone squints as light explodes in the camp.  Monitoring by radio, Zoe instructed the cameramen to switch from nightvision to spotlights.  The bear growls again, then snorts and simply walks away.  The light bothers its eyes and it didn't find enough food to be worth the bother.

Miriam doesn't know what else to do, so she gets a fire going, telling herself that fire will scare away animals.  Janei and Staton take an accounting of what's damaged or missing.  Karen is a bit freaked-out, and paces around — but always in front of the camera lights.  A medic is giving Rob a clean bill of health when Zoe arrives, and Rob turns his temper on her, accusing her of all sorts of things in the way the game is being conducted.

Zoe has an intensity about her as, with a deadly calm, she explains to Rob the rules of the game and how the production staff had to be impartial and not interfere when the bear entered Cree's camp.  They posted people to keep Cree a safe distance away.  But Rob chose to ignore their instructions and provoked a potentially dangerous animal, risking his safety and that of his tribemates and her staff.

Rob accuses Zoe of luring the bear into Cree's camp, to further punish them as she's had it out for Cree all along.  Zoe just looks at Rob and asks him if he'd remembered to bear-bag their food.  Everyone in Cree look at Rob; it was his turn to hoist their food up into a tree, away from animals.  It was in their safety guide to avoid just this situation.  Rob denies it.

Zoe has had enough.  For ignoring the instructions of an official and endangering the safety of the show, Zoe summarily disqualifies Rob.  She has his bags packed and, making a point, has the man with the rifle escort Rob out.

Before Zoe leaves, Karen goes up to her.  Terrified over the incident, Karen is withdrawing from the game.  Zoe isn't happy about losing two players over this stupidity, but she accepts Karen's decision to leave.

A few moments later, Miriam, Staton and Janei are alone at their fire, the last remnants of the Cree tribe.
