Because of the rich diversity of its people, you can find almost any kind of food, if you know where to look.
Chain restaurants are common in America, especially in urban areas, but "mom and pop" establishments still thrive.
Ethnic foods of all kinds are popular. Mexican food has recently edged out Chinese as America's favorite ethnic cuisine. Thai, Lebanese, Cuban, French, and even some African bistros have cropped up in various places, but availability depends much on your location.
Sadly, for many South Africans, their favorite foods are not easily available, and, if they can be found, it's at a price! Your best bet is to try to find a shop that specializes in international and gourmet foods, especially English food. If you live in the Dallas, Texas area, The British Emporium in Grapevine has a great selection of South African goods and if they don't have it on their shelves, they may order it for you. Also in Dallas, you can get biltong from [email protected]. The British Gourmet in Scottsdale (Phoenix), Arizona also carries some items, but their selection is small.
