The Ganga waters are polluted to 90% with all sorts of polluting materials. Ganga is one of the most polluted rivers in the world,it is reported in th world water commission.After decades of silence over the crisis ,the government of india has come with an 'action plan' in 1985 which in phases is still going on ,with no positive results.Hundreds & thousands of crores of rupees have been spent for the implementation of these plans.Due to lack in technical,social & political means the implementation of plan has been still hindered the dishonesty pollution adding to the water pollution. In words,truely 1975 crores of rupees have been down the drain of Ganga. She flows from Himalayas into bay of bengal through a distance of 2525 km. The 'Ganga Action Plan' which started in 1985 was aimed to complete by 1992. For the same 462.04 crores were allocated. The 1340 million litres of polluted water that is formed daily in ganga water,to be purified could not be reached due to lack of funds & was limited to 873 million litres. To avoid the diminishion in the quality of Ganga water,261 plans have been evolved.Relative to the intensity of pollution the cities in the three states Utterpradesh,Bihar,Westbengal were divided into three categoried. Six in U.P four in Bihar,15 in Westbengal,on the total 25 cities onthe whole were recognised as the source of 75% of the total ganga pollution. 27 cities under the first category,73 cities under second category & the rest on the bank of Ganga into third category were thus divided.

It involved building of purification reservoir & avoiding the new gushes of polluted water. In Allahabad , Kanpur ,Varanasi,patna & near areas,it is really a great problem to stop the dirt,suage that meets the Ganga,daily. In those 100 million litres of polluted water in Allahabad,360 million litres of polluted water in kanpur,150 million litres of polluted water used to pour down. The waters were then used for hydel power generation. The analysis conducted by a researcher of Oslo university on collected samples of water from kanpur showed that a litre of water contained 800 milligrams of chemical oxygen demand (c.o.d) (normal composition is 250 milligrams for 1 litre according to Indian standards),sulphates & sulphides combined together were about 620 milligrams,10.9 milligrams of chromium (normal compositon is 2 milligrams for 1 litre).

The analysis given by a hydralic engineering professor of benarus hindu university, virabhadra misra showed that 100 millilitres of ganga water contained 170 million bacteria, which was recommended by mahanta (listed in 'TIME magazine' in 'one of 7 heros on the planet' and amoung 500 who fight for the environment by U.N.O ) who is bringing a movement over the 'Ganga crisis' in America & India. As part of second phase of implementation of action plan 1300 crore rupees were pooled in 1995. Now , the plan being undertaken is national river conservation plan (N.R.C.P) in which more than 20 rivers flowing in 14 states are given place.

Pollution is pollution ,let it be in water,soil,air,fire , the whole universe. One must first of all try to find the pollution in their minds which reside in their minds in the form of evil thoughts.

As it remains in pandora's box, hope the only hopeful thing remains in our lives, leaving the decision to be made by us to throw the pollution out of our lives,let what it may. Hope that decision comes out as a well thought out plan very shortly in every human being to protect our planet,OUR MOTHER EARTH.
