Our economy, the 21st Century, is referred to as the always-on economy as author Tim Sanders discusses his new study. NEDS is an acronym for new economy depression syndrome. It can be defined as a mental state that results from information overload and its symptoms include fatigue, stress, anxiety, and irritability. When a person suffers from NEDS, which can early on be seen as information overload and not yet identified as the mental state which is a current study, it is not extraordinary to see a slip into depression.

Sanders has used the term always-on to distinguish the state of constant interruption which can arise from the incessant chains of instant messages, emails, and rings from a cellular phone. Information overload can either derive from the accelerated rate of consumption of information - from newspapers, web pages, and reference books to workshops. Speaking on a business standpoint [wherein Sanders started his study]: It is stylishly expected of a productive business person to keep his/her availability open; thus, resulting in a successful business and a reputation as an upstanding competitor. NEDS can hence affect business people by lowering productivity and initiating the corrosion of personal relationships.

Though this mental state is directed towards those in the field of business, individuals are also widely susceptible to NEDS. As newer technology emerges, more individuals become involved and addicted, with the internet as a wide component.

According to Sanders, the beginning of the solution is to create a balance in how you use technology. As said, you can achieve resiliency through warm living. As I see it, it is a balance of technology, nurture, and self transcendence (to be thorough). I say this to point reference to health, human contact, etc. He nurtures the reader in his book, “Love is the Killer App,” which by title alone is catchy and enlightening. His motto which graciously follows: “In a world of inforuption, love is a killer app.”

I recommend reading and enjoying books of fiction, sci fi, and those that tell stories. Cultivating a vivid imagination can work wonders in creating a good mood, which can be followed by a strong work ethic and constant motivation. If we are to point attention to the health craze, I speak personally when saying that exercise can lift spirits, though the cliched routine isn’t always the best manner to uptake.
