| Goal & Purpose of the Faith | ||||||||
| The goal of worshipping the Hol is to achieve a state of incorruptibility by eliminating all sources of corruption among the mortal races. Worshippers accomplish this task by following the Realities to Corruption and the Path to Salvation. They also conduct Wars of the Hol upon the unfaithful. If these requirements are met, then the person's spirit will enter the Heavenly Oasis of Righteousness upon death where they will join the legions of Spiritual Soldiers to battle the demonic influences in world. | ||||||||
| Requirements of the Priesthood | ||||||||
| Alignment Choices: Priests are allowed to be of any alignment. Most will be lawful good, lawful neutral, or chaotic good. Although some priests are evil, there is much less corruption (or, more importantly, there is much less perception of corruption) in the faith fo the Hol compared to Aetonism. Minimum Ability Scores: As per the cleric class. Feats, Skills, Weapon Proficiencies Required: As per the cleric class. Most starting clerics of the Hol will carry a scimitar and a light crossbow. Duties: Priests of the Hol have the duties of devotions, guidance, missions, omen-reading, and vigilance. Devotions - The Priests of the Hol will help to call the faithful to prayer at dawn, noon and dusk every day. These duties are officially carried out by the Caller, one of the most possitions in the faith of the Hol. The official ceremony is conducted by the Sa'Alik (sometimes called the Bane of Corruption). Lower level priests will assist the Sa'Alik during these ceremonies which are short on ritual and mainly involve the repetition of the Realities of Corruption over and over. Guidance - As with most religions, the priests of the Hol are often approached by the faithful for advice and guidance on various matters. Priests are expect to offer their opinons when asked for help, but oftentimes they may be told to consult with a higher level member of the religion before providing an answer. Missions - A relatively new phenomenon among the religion of the Hol is the idea of sending out individual priests on various missions for the faith, ranging from delivering messages between temples to simple "wanderings" in the desert to "find oneself." A priest is expect to follow these missions without question. Omen-Reading - A priest of the Hol is charged with the duty of reading various omens and portents in order to tell the future. The religion is one of mysticism, and priests are taught from the very beginning how to perform the ritual of omen-reading for his particular sect. The most common form is the inhalation of the Sacred Fumes, the smoke made by the burning of specific desert plant leaves which cause a state of near-intoxication for the priest. Many priests will utilize the omen-reading ritual in connection with the duty of guidance if they are asked something to which they do not know the answer. Omen-reading is reserved for dignitaries and other persons of importance, although individual wandering priests can, and often do, perform the ritual for more common folk. Vigilance - This is one of the most important duties of a priest of the Hol. He or she will constantly be on a quest to save other mortals fro corruption, and will always be on the lookout for the influence of Demons or Ifrit. Priests are expected to inform their superiors of any suspect demonic influences immediately. Rights: In addition to the duties listed above, a priest of the Hol has the following rights. Church Trial - All priest of the Hol are exempt from local justice (in countries where worship of the Hol is the state religion). The priests of the Hol police themselves and bring their people to justice for any crimes committed. Separation from the Faith - One of the best tools in the hands of a priest of the Hol is the threat of Expulsion, used for flagrant violators of the laws of the religion. Summoning of consorting with Demons or Ifrit are automatic grounds for Expulsion. Other causes for Expulsion are using other types of demonic magick and non-compliance with the rules of the Sacred Path. Expelled members of the faith are branded with a black tattoo of a bat (symbolizing the evil of Demons) on their foreheads and are no longer trusted. The majority of the Expelled are forced to move outside the area of influence of the Hol in order to try to lead normal lives. |
