Farmers Markets and Community Supported Agriculture
Sustainable Agriculture Louisville actively supports existing and new Farmers Markets and Community Supported Agriculture in the Louisville Area. In this section we list and describe these marketing projects. Links to markets, directions, development plans and other information will be added in the next few weeks.

There are five farmer's markets that would be in Jefferson Co. metro council districts. They are:
Bardstown Road Farmers Market
Crescent Hill
East Jeff. Co. at U.S. 42 and Wolf Pen Branch
Old Louisville
Proposed New Market in Portland.

Community Supported Agriculture:
This might be a good time to encourage those of you who live or work near downtown (or even if you don't!) to consider joining the Family Farm Project. This is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation that
will be based in downtown Louisville this year at Glassworks (8th and Market Sts.)
This CSA is a group of farmers from Trimble, Oldham and Henry Counties that will provide a weekly basket of fresh, locally grown vegetables for customers' pick-up on Wednesdays between 4 and 6:30 p.m. May 1 - October
30.
Parking is available at the rear of the building - easily accessible from 8th St. It is also on a busline.
I count 31 different types of vegetables to be grown this year. The cost is $450 for 27 weeks which averages $16.70/week. If you think you can't eat a bushel basket of produce once a week, consider sharing with a neighbor or
co-worker!
The deadline for sign-up has been extended until April 20. This year is a pilot project to see how much support there might be for a retail operation at the same location that would sell only locally grown farm products.
Several of these farmers have attended recent SAL meetings and many of them are also active with Community Farm Alliance. There are many good reasons to
support this project. If we want to help grow a local food economy and get to know the people who grow our food, (including meat - some of the co-op members are cattlemen) this is a great way to start!
It also helps to preserve working farmland and adds to the vitality of downtown (which helps to discourage sprawl).
Please share this with other people who may be interested and get the word out to your various internet groups. It is a great idea, but will only succeed if, guess what, the community supports it!
