Chapter 1: The Begining

'hm... where to start...' Yuki thought as she looked at both directions, she sensed that she was being watched both from the right and the left and saw other people going to the right.

'I'll pick the right then... I remembered what he said before he left'

-Flashback-

"Remember, when you get started, always go where most people go... that way, you can even get help from other players... are you still following?" Hoshi asked waving a hand in front of a distracted Yuki.

"Huh? Why are you saying these things anyway? I mean... it is an rpg and I do know how to play in it..." Yuki protested.

"You'll find out... it isn't a normal game... okay I'll continue..."

-end flashback-

'Okay, right it is then...' Yuki then walked to the right.

As she was walking, she heard a strange sound, 'hm?' she looked around for anything suspicious, then something crept up on her leg.

"Ah~!" she yelped out as she fell off balance and flopped on the ground.

The 'strange sound' was made by a orange, black-striped kitten, perhaps only a few months old.

'Oh...how cute...' she thought as she picked up the kitten and cuddled it, "I'll take you in for a while... I'm sure your owner is just nearby." she said as if talking to the kitten.

After the little 'cat-astrophe' she went on with her walk to the nearest town.

"Antokiba...city of prizes..." she read out loud and glanced around the city, millions of posters pasted on walls of buildings with different pictures and ads.

She approached one of the walls with a lot of posters pasted, 'sou ka... there are ads here for some things in exchange for items... this is a start then...'

'hm?' suddenly, she noticed one ad with the picture of the kitten she was holding, "Lost cat... if found please return in exchange for the mirror of colors." she read then looked at the place where the kitten can be returned, 'I wonder if the item is important'

"Thank you, thank you so much for finding Tiger..." a little boy said, the kitten meowed as the boy cuddled it, identifying him as its owner. "Thank you so much, here is your reward..." a lady, most probably his mother said, giving Yuki a gold mirror, in which when she held it became a card.

"hm...098...Mirror of Colors...B-020...? what exactly are these?" Yuki asked, her face painted with a puzzling look.

"Ah...your first card?" a man asked, walking up behind her.

"hai..." she answered, feeling embarassed.

"It's easy, the number on the upper left is the number of the card, since it is number 98, then it has a place in the reserved pockets section, the other number on the upper right is the difficulty and the max number of the card, B is the difficulty and 20 is the max number of this card." the man explained.

"Sou ka..." she then raised her right hand, "Book..." and her binder appeared, she placed it in the free pockets section rather than the reserved pockets section. "umm... don't you need this card?" she asked, closing her binder.

"Now, we don't have a use for it even if this card is very valuable... finishing this game seems impossible and I like living here just fine it's more peaceful living a life here than continuing to play the game." the man answered.

"Nani? Why don't you have a ring?" Yuki asked, noticing that neither he nor his wife wore a ring the same as hers.

"Someone took my ring in exchange for my life...one of those... player hunters..."

"Nani? Do people get killed in this game?"

"Yes...Since there are max numbers, especially for rare cards, the more players there are, the less chances are there for other players to finish the game, since the goal is to complete the cards for the reserved pockets."

"Sou da..." 'that's why Hoshi told me to be careful...'

"Papa...let's go... mama says dinner's almost ready..." the boy called out, still playing with the kitten.

"Yes, coming..." the man answered back.

Knowing it's time for her to leave, she slightly bowed, "Arigatou for the information you have given and also for the reward..."

"You're welcome... we are willing to give it to you as a token for finding our son's pet..." the man responded.

"I must be going now..." Yuki said bowing again and leaving to get back to the town square.

'hmm... what to do now...better ask some people here for more information...It might help me lots...' Yuki thought when she got back to the town square.

Seeing quite a large group of people in front of a billboard of some sort she took a quick look at what is written 'hm? what's that...? Antokiba City calendar of events...there might be something interesting there...'

As she approached, she heard a boy with spiky hair about her age saying, "September is rock, paper, scissors month..."

'hm? I'm not the only kid around here then...(well as much as I would consider myself a kid)' Yuki thought.

Another boy with white hair then asked, "Do you know what day is it anyway?"

"Ah..nope... uh.. mister what date is it today?" the spiky-haired boy randomly asked a man behind him.

"September 11th..."

"It's just the same..." the boy told his companion.

"Well... it's on the 15th so there's still 4 more days...what will we do before that?" the white-haired boy asked, then both heard their stomachs growl.

"uh...let's eat first..." the spiky-haired boy said

"yeah... let's eat then get some information..." the white-haired boy concluded as they went off to find a place to eat.

After taking her attention back to herself, Yuki also heard her stomach growl, 'ah...I forgot to eat before coming here... besides... I didn't know the game is like this...' she thought as she sweatdropped and decided to follow the two boys.

A.N.: again certain disclaimers apply... and surely you know who the two boys are ne? ^_~ none other than Gon and Killua~ [whoops... spoiler desu >_<'] anyway, I forgot to mention... this fic takes place on the time of the Greed Island OVA timeline... and my basis is not the manga but the OVA so some of the cards you might encounter are just inventions of mine ^_^'' before I forget... please don't kill me~! Ja bai bai~!
