How I Feel About Being a Writer
The way I think of myself is that Im not a very enthusiastic writer but do know
that what effort I put into writing will pay off later. I think that Im
somewhere among the average of all students in terms of writing skills. I have
a few weaknesses that I plan to work on throughout this course.
I view myself as a writer who
neither loves to write essays nor hates to write them. Overall I hold a
positive position towards writing. By this I mean that even though I may not
feel like writing an essay, I will do it anyway because it will help me with
every other essay I have to write in the future. I will not complain much if I
am given a writing assignment, knowing that this will benefit me in the long
term.
The main reason why I chose to take this course was to improve my writing skills. These are skills that are essential to writing papers in the near future, such as college application essays and college papers. By the end of this course I expect to have greatly improved these skills. They include thinking of better ideas more frequently, being able to convey these ideas with more clarity, and just having the ability to write higher quality essays
more efficiently and in a shorter period of time.
One of my strengths is that for the most part I can get good ideas about what to write. However, my ability to organize these ideas into a well-formed essay is not very great. My largest weakness is that I do not clarify things as well as I think I do. Therefore I may have good ideas in my head, but often do not accurately transfer them onto paper. The reason for this may be because I try to force many complex ideas into one assignment. Because of this I tend to
write better essays on topics that are more straightforward and well defined.
What scares me the most about the writing process is not being able to think of what to Getting stuck somewhere along the paper, and not knowing what to write is what I most dislike about writing. Another thing that bothers me is not being able to exactly express my ideas on paper after obtaining them. Both of these things occur almost every time I am given an essay assignment.
The part that I enjoy the most about writing is when I can write exactly what is on my mind without stopping and just flow. Even though this happens rarely, it is one of the moments I look forward to when writing an essay that I have good ideas about.
The skills that I want to improve on the most are those associated with the formation of my ideas. This is a very important process that is heavily dependent upon by the outcome of the essay. If my ideas are not well organized, then they are harder to understand when expressing them. This also decreases the focus and meaning of the paper. Even if the ideas are not great, but the organization of them is, then the essay has greater potential for having a higher quality with more focus and clarity.
Throughout this course I not only hope to increase my skillfulness to write essays but also form an enhanced method of approaching an essay. I look forward to completing this course to overcome my weaknesses, even though it may not seem
like it when being assigned an essay.
