| Late July, 1387. The small farming community of Maiden Newton has been relatively quiet and peaceful, for citizens both living and undead, since Lord David Thoring, Cainite Prince of the area, went missing almost eight decades ago. However, things have recently become less serene. Six months ago, a spate of bizarre killings began in the town; victims have been found suffering hideous mutilations, their limbs and flesh somehow welded together in horrifying displays of twisted contortion. These killings are still continuing even now, and the authorities still have no leads and no suspects. But this is not all that has happened. Three weeks ago to the day, the entire Cainite population of Maiden Newton vanished without trace. Atrius, esteemed Tzimisce Prince of Exeter, has therefore called for a meeting of all local Cainites, to be held in the town in question, so that this mystery can be addressed. |

| On Thursday 31st July 2003, Maiden Newton Masquerade Society held a special LARP game of Dark Age Vampire, played in and around a barn owned by Richard Hunt and his family. The game, which lasted a total of eight and a half hours without break, was written and run by Jonathan Thornton and Tom Pittwood, and was attended by twelve players, as well as the two Storytellers. The games plot centred around the mysterious disappearance of the Cainites of the town of Maiden Newton, and the efforts to investigate this as well as the mystery of the bizarre murders. It turned out, in the end, that all of this was the work of the insane Tzimisce Kraken, who had been using his alternate identity of Atrius to manoeuvre first the missing Cainites of the town, and then more hapless Cainite victims from surrounding areas, into the town so that his master, Lord Arrakon, could devour them. The plan ultimately failed (although the schemes of both Kraken and Lord Arrakon were far from over see The Sixth Extinction and Dies Irae), but the game was overall a success. Running the game was very tricky eight and a half hours is an extremely long time but it was pulled off reasonably well, even if there were the constant complications of Jonathan forgetting to bring the pre-written plot, Clive chasing down the dual carriageway looking for his costume, there being no moon and lots of rain, most people constantly dropping out of character, Amanda, Nel and Lig falling asleep halfway through, and of course, Tom playing a Tremere infernalist. Even so, most people seemed to enjoy the game, so thanks to all who were involved. |
