What is SA-I-GU?

Known to many as the Los Angeles Riots and to others as the Civil Unrest or Los Angeles Upheavals and even Los Angeles Uprisings, the Korean American community simply calls the events of April 29, 1992 as Sa-I-GU. SA-I-GU literally means 4-29, in Korean, which is the day it began.
By naming the events of April 29, 1992, SA-I-GU, instead of labeling it as a riot or unrest allows many people's experiences and perspectives to be represented. Instead of imposing one interpretation, we, as second-generation Korean Americans, desire all voices and experiences of the Los Angeles community to be shared and understood.
