我認為學習英文最為重要的是認識生字，之後才是文法。
試想想，我們最初學習英文是從英文二十六個字母開始，接下來便是看圖學生字，然後才開始學習簡單句子。因此，學習外語，熟習生字是優先於文法，可惜的是許多英文教學的後期往往忽視這部份的發展，只是追求高深的文法、語句、修辭等方面。缺乏詞彙是香港不少學生拿起英文報紙一面茫然的真正原因，當然這並不能完全把責任歸咎於學校教育不完善，因為學習一種語言並非單靠上課便能掌握，必須在課餘時間加鍛鍊。(這可能就是日校教育並不重視詞彙的原因)

市面上已經有不少好的文法書籍，所以有餘錢的朋友盡量可以多買數本回家參考自學。但是在專門討論詞彙的教參書並不多，大部分都是外國的引進的，並不太合適香港學生，加上價錢昂貴，是故決定在御試堂放上我學生時代整理過的生字簿，希望對大家研習英文時候有所幫助。

I believed and still believe the most crucial part of learning Enlgish is vocabulary, rather than grammar, contrary to common belief.

Recall how we first touched English. Twenty-six alphabets were our first enemies on the road. Vocubularies with visual pictures came in immediately after our first milestone. Only after we accumulated enough words in our mind, teachers started to teach us simple sentences. Therefore, acquaintance with words is more fundamental than learning gammar, since it is not difficult to draw inference by logic and reason. Unfortunately, this kind of attitude does not prevail in high schools where advanced grammar, complex sentence structure, rhetorical speeches are emphasized. It is the very reason whey high school students find it uneasy to read English newspaper and listen to English TV and radio programs. Nevertheless, one should not attribute the responsiblity to school as learning language requires effort outside classroom.

Variety of good grammar books are available in book stores. I would suggest you should buy a few for self-learning and referencing. Yet, it is unfortunate few books devoted to discussion of vocabulary building are sold, possibly due to little emphasis in formal education. So, it is not surprising to note most of those books are imported from foregin countries and thus less likely to suit the need of Hong Kong students. For the above reasons, I decided to put my reorganized vocabulary book on this site as a contribution to fill the gap.

對於明年要應考的同學，我相信你應該對下面所列的詞語認識。若然你只是懂得一半，那應你要在鑽研英文上多加努力。

For those who are taking CE next year, you should feel comfortable with the words given below. If not, then I think you need to spend more time on study English.
