"Spike is going down. You can attack me, you can send assassins after me.... that's just fine. But nobody messes with my boyfriend." - Buffy, What's My Line? Part II
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Two Original Air Date: 1997-1998, WB Buy from Amazon.com Essential Series Season
2.01 - When She Was Bad 9/15/97 Series Essential Viewing One of the Series' Ten Best Episodes Buffy returns to Sunnydale from LA after being haunted all summer by her death at the hands of the Master the previous year. Wonderfully weird dream sequences aboud as Buffy acts like a bitch (ie Cordelia) to her friends and Angel, culminating in one of the series best scene - a seductive dance sequence where Buffy plays on Xander's attraction to her and Angel's jealousy. Joss Whedon written/directed 2.02 - Some Assembly Required A painful monster-of-the-week episode that has some excellent group interactions, including Angel and Cordelia. Important Buffy/Angel and Xander/Willow scenes as well. 2.03 - School Hard Future series regular Spike is introduced here as the bad-boy from England, arriving in Sunnydale for the sole purpose of killing another slayer (he killed two already). We are also introduced to the wonderful vampire Drucilla, Spike's love-interest. 2.04 - Inca Mummy Girl So bad it's funny, or just bad? Xander gets some much-needed screentime as he flirts with the monster-of-the-week Inca mummy girl, who much suck out the energy of others in order to stay alive. Secondary character Jonathan gets a nice guest spot. 2.05 - Reptile Boy Another painful monster-of-the-week episode (what is that, two in a row?), where Buffy and Cordelia must face off against evil demon-worshiping frat boys. Has some great lines, but otherwise is very forgettable. 2.06 - Halloween Series Essential Episode The Scooby gang (and Cordelia) face a Halloween where trick-or-treaters are turned into the costumes they are wearing. Has some great Angel/Buffy relationship moments, some truly incredible lines, and Willow shows some skin. Introduces us to Daniel Osbourne (Oz), who is immediately attracted to Willow. 2.07 - Lie to Me Solid episode that continues the season's arc regarding Angel, Spike, and Drucilla. Buffy and friends meet a cult of people that want to be turned into vampires, who they call "The Lonely Ones." We are introduced to Anne, who pops up in future Buffy episodes and on Angel's spin-off show. Joss Whedon written/directed 2.08 - The Dark Age Yay, Giles get his own episode! This is a deliberately dark, slow episode about Giles' past that takes a few watches to fully appreciate. Includes some very important developments on the Buffy/Angel frong. 2.09/2.10 - What's My Line? Part One and Two Series Essential Two-Parter Buffy scribe Marti Noxon hits a home-run with a two parter that acts as a climax to the Spike/Drucilla story arc and a bridge to the remainder of the season. Buffy is hunted by a group of hired killers, Angel is tortured by Drucilla with holy water, and in a suprisingly and interesting development, we are introduced to a brand-spanking new vampire slayer! It turns out that since Buffy died in Season One, another vampire slayer was called, in the form of African-born Kendra. By the episode's end, Xander and Cordelia share a tumultuous kiss, Spike is paralyzed, Angel is subjected to hours of shirtless S&M torture, the audience squeals with joy, Drucilla becomes all powerful and disappears for a few episodes, and Kendra takes a flight back to Africa. 2.11 - Ted John Ritter guest stars as a killer robot impersonating a human being that tries to woo Buffy's mother. An interesting take on divorced families and a discussion on what rights Buffy has in terms of the laws of killing/harming other people.
