| Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Two Original Air Date: 1997-1998, WB Buy from Amazon.com Essential Series Season |
| 2.12 - Bad Eggs Another silly monster of the week episode where we're subjected to two annoying Texan vampire brothers and an evil egg-laying uber-demon. This episode features some excellent Xander/Cordelia moments, and some interesting commentary on what high school means in the great scheme of life to a teenager. 2.13/2.14 - Surprise/Innocence Series Essential Two-Parter One of the Top Ten Series Episodes Surprise - By the end of this episode, the entire season/series will be completely and utterly uprooted and replaced with an entirely new beast. This is the episode where Angel loses his soul. But, before that, we are treated to a very David-Lynch-style dream sequence, chock full of symbolism and foreshadowing (Drucilla kills Angel! Willow speaks in Latin!) It's Buffy's birthday, and the Scooby Gang (plus Cordelia) throw a party. Willow invites Oz, giddy at the ability to use the word "date." Xander invites Cordelia, as she still insists that they aren't a couple. A paralyzed Spike and a powerful Drucilla are assembling a blue demon that can kill any human by simply touching them, and Angel decides that he much take the only body part that the evil duo doesn't yet have away to China. Spike's henchmen intervene and steal the remaining body part, and after being thrown in the great Pacific Angel takes Buffy over to his place to patch her up. Buffy ends up losing her "innocence," which leads into Innocence where Angel has lost his soul (because his curse entitles that a true moment of happiness means the curse is broken). Things get really complicated - Spike, Angel, and Drucilla take the blue demon out for hunting season, as the interpersonal relationships of the Scooby gang enter their own tumultuous territory. Willow, who is in love with Xander, discovers him and Cordilia making out; Giles discovers the true identity of Jenny Calendar; Willow tries to get revenge on Xander by attempting a make-out session with Xander. By the episode's end, Buffy has killed the demon with a rocket launcher (!!!)`stolen by Xander from the Sunnydale military, Buffy has kicked Angel in the balls, and Buffy has turned 18. Happy birthday. 2.15 - Phases The budding Willow/Oz relationship gets some screentime as Oz deals with the fact that he's a werewolf. Angel sends Buffy as message by turning one of her friends into a vampire. 2.16 - Bewithed, Bothered, and Bewildered A very amusing episode where Xander and newbie-witch Amy cast a love spell so Xander can get his revenge on Cordelia, who just broke up with him. By the episode's end, Buffy has been turned into a rat, Buffy's mom has flirted with Xander, Cordelia calls Harmony a sheep, Willow has attacked Xander with an axe, and Oz has seen Buffy naked. Classic stuff here! 2.17 - Passion Essential Series Viewing (Kleenex alert!) Utterly amazing episode where Angel mercilessly murders Jenny Calendar, sending Giles into an angry vengence spree. Complete with amazing Christopher Beck scoring and interesting direction, this is one of the series finest and darkest moments. Angel is an arse. 2.18 - Killed By Death Interesting monster of the week with really bad special effects and makeup, this episode is saved by Charisma Carpenter's amazing comedic timing and and laugh-out-loud ending. 2.19 - I Only Have Eyes For You Essential Series Viewing Sublime monster of the week that takes full advantage of the ensemble cast, Buffy and friends take on a ghost that has inhabbited Sunnydale High. Thanks to a vampires-can't-die-easily loophole, the ghost's curse is broken and Buffy can finally forgive herself for what happenned with Angel. 2.20 - Go Fish! Noteworthy only for the rare opportunity to see Nicholas Brendon in a speedo (if you like that kind of thing) 2.21/2.22 - Becoming Parts I and II Essential Series Viewing (Kleenex alert!) By the end of this stunning two-parter, Angel's past is revealed, Buffy kills a newly-ensouled Angel to hell to save the world, Giles has been tortured, Kendra has been killed by Drucilla, Willow has discovered her witch-craft powers, and Buffy has run away from Sunnydale after her mom's discovery of Buffy's calling. |
