Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Season One
Original Air Date: 1997, WB
Buy from Amazon.com
1.01 - Welcome to the Hellmouth (WB)  Original Air Date: 3/3/97 Series Essential Viewing
Our introduction to the heroine of the show, Buffy Anne Summers, and her best friends/family: Rupert Giles, her adult watcher/guardian, Xander Lavelle Harris, the loveable everyday-man, and Willow Rosenburg, proud computer geek.  We also first meet Cordelia Chase, Buffy's high-school rival, and Angel, Buffy's future lover interest.  Brimming with refreshing performances and witty dialogue, Buffy the Vampire Slayer showed potential from the very start.
1.02 - The Harvest  Original Air Date: 3/10/97
Buffy's new friends are forced to deal with the vamping of one of their long-time best friends.  Buffy prevents "The Harvest," a ritual, that if successful, would have risen a powerful ancient vampire named "The Master" out of hell.  The groups dynamics are set into place: they are the scooby gang, with Buffy being the muscle, Willow and Xander the back-up, and Giles the brains/guardian of the group.  Cordelia is the reluctant fifth member, though she spends most of her time making fun of the group.
1.03 - The Witch  Original Air Date: 3/17/97  Series Essential Viewing
The show's very first "monster of the week" episode.  Buffy encounters a girl named Amy (who would become a major secondary character in later seasons of the show) who desperately wants to get onto the cheerleading team, and uses desperate measures to achieve her goals.  Only, Amy isn't the one driving her body - her sociopath witch-craft using mother is.
1.04 - Teacher's Pet  3/24/97
Xander falls for his science class's subsitute teacher, who ends up being a demon in the form of a praying mantis.  Thus begins a long line of Demon/Xander relationships.
1.05 - Never Kill a Boy on the First Date  3/31/97
This episode deal's with Buffy's isolation in being the chosen vampire slayer, along with continuing the seaon's plotline involving the power Master.
1.06 - The Pack  4/01/97
Forgettable monster-of-the-week episode where Xander gets turned into a demonic hyena-human hybrid.  Reveals dark layers of the growing sexual tension between Xander and Buffy.  Principal Flutie gets eaten.
1.07 - Angel  4/14/97
Strong episode that deals with the growing attraction between Buffy and guest star Angel, who turns out to be a vampire (!!!).  Buffy finds out the truth about Angel during a tense face-off - Angel is a vampire cursed with a soul, forced to spend eternity amending for his life as a vicious vampire.  Angel slays Darla, the Master's apprentice and the love of his vampire life, to show that he's really on Buffy's side when the two fight.  Darla will reappear on Angel's own spin-off show.
1.08 - I Robot, You Jane  4/28/97  One of the Series Five Worst Episodes
Willow gets her very own episode!  .....and it's embarrasing!  The only redeeming aspect of this computer-demon-love-story is the introduction of Jenny Calendar, who is very important in the show's second season.
1.09 - The Puppet Show  5/05/97
A hilarious, witty, and well-acted episode with a terrible concept - a demon is harvesting body parts, and puppet demon-killer named Sid is out to kill it.  Features great Cordelia/Scooby interactions.
1.10 - Nightmares  5/12/97  Series Essential Viewing
Excellent monster-of-the-week episode with a boy trapped in a dream-state that he eventually sucks the rest of Sunnydale into.  Showcases each of the main characters' fears, including Buffy's poignant fears surrounding her parents' divorce.  A touching, moving episode.
1.11 - Out of Mind, Out of Sight  5/19/97
Interesting concept (a girl feels so lonely she turn invisible with the help of the powers of the Hellmouth) with bad execution.  Harmony, one of Cordelia's posse, gets important screen-time.
1.12 - Prophecy Girl  6/02/97  Series Essential Viewing
Intense season ender where Buffy dies, Xander professes his love to Buffy, Willow cries a lot, Giles acts heroic, and Buffy is revived by Xander and promptly kicks the Master's ass.  Cordelia discovers Sunnydale's secret, and Angel plays fisticuffs with Xander.
