What
is ERP?
ERP does not
seem to have a well-documented & accepted definition.
However, one formal definition according to a professional
Organisation, APICS, is: "An Accounting oriented
Information System for Identifying & Planning the Enterprise
wide resources to take, make, ship & account for Customer
Orders." The key words involved here are "Information
System", which indicates that ERP is primarily an
Information technology oriented system which provides immense
help in planning the Enterprise wide resources. ERP is
essentially an Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
driven philosophy. ERP assists the poor decision making process,
which led to low utilisation of man-power, plant & machinery,
material and money resources). With ERP, availability on
real-time Information has provided a technology platform to
bridge this gap. Thus, the business objectives of the
Organisation (profits, customer satisfaction, etc.. are
achieved by sharing the accurate & instant Information
through-our the Enterprise. This was possible due to innovation
in Information Technology, e.g., Client / Server concepts, Object
Oriented Design & Programming, Internet & Intranet,
etc..

What
is BPR?
The most
accepted & formal definition of Business Process
Reengineering (BPR), is given by Hammer & Champhy, which
states, "BPR is the fundamental re-thinking &
radical re-design of processes to achieve dramatic improvement
in critical, contemporary measures of performance such as Cost,
Quality, Service & Speed." This has few important
keywords, which needs clear understanding. Here the dramatic
achievement means to achieve 80% or 90% reduction, in delivery
time, work-in-progress (WIP), or rejection rate and not just 5%
to 10% reduction. Radical design means that the BPR is being
re-invented & not just enhancing or improving. In short BPR
concept states that what ever one has been doing in the past is
all wrong. One is required to re-think & re-engineer the
whole business logic process. Fundamental re-thinking means
asking the question, "Why do you do what you do?",
there-by eliminating the business process altogether if it does
not add any value to the customers.
