Holiday Cards 1990 - Present

Back to the Holiday Menu

Tis the Season
These all began by accident.  I first saw the fun of doing Holiday Cards while working at Lohan Associates in the late 80's.   They had a custom doing architectural greeting cards.  There would be subject matters like a Christmas table setting for famous architects, or the blueprint for Santa's sleigh.  I worked with the Planning department to do one that showed the master plan for Santa's North Pole operation, a town in the shape of a huge snowflake.

But I found all these subjects too flat, and took the medium and found Architecture scenes in Chicago that I could skew with the holiday spirit.  The cost of mailing these out every year (about 200 friends)  eventually forced me to develop this Web site.  I continue to add image to my gallery.

All images were first rendered with ink on white film.  As I drew these I would have to think in the "negative" since the final image would be a reverse of my drawing.

I actually started this technique when I was studying in Scotland.  I was doing lighting schemes for a historical building and needed to work with white ink on black paper.  My technique eventually became more involved.
