Cards of Holidays Past

On the Chicago River 1993

This was an image that I composed from photographs and on-site sketch visits.  As I typically do in these cards, I was looking for an architectural winter scene that could only exist in my mind.  Although hard to see in this image, that is Santa with his sleigh and reindeer standing at the top of the stairs admiring the frozen fountain.  And I don't believe that Chicagoans have ever skated on the river.

I had worked at the firm that designed the fountain, helped build the model, and watched it become a popular focal point in Chicago.  In 1995 I proposed to Julie at this very spot.  It has always been a very special place to me.

Lake Point Towers Interior 1994

Lake Point Tower was designed by two of my professors from College.  I was fortunate to learn quite a lot from them concerning this spectacular essay in steel and glass.  But I felt that the interiors never explored what their full potential could be.  In this composition I explored an non-existant two story space with a dramatic staircase.  Once again this is a combination of photographs and site visits to a vacant unit.

Could such a space be built at Lake Point?  It has been done in other buildings, but always at great cost.  But then again the fun of these vignettes to to push the imagination.
