| There was a man who kept to
himself. Rarely exiting his home unless he must. He
was a decent and moral man. He was a practicing Catholic
and attended church every Sunday. The Priest decided to
invite the man to one of the churches social gatherings.
After much influence was dispensed, the man agreed. Upon
attending this event he met a girl. The two of them met
and fell in love. They soon wed and had a child. It was a
merry life he led, this once secluded individual. One day
his wife was standing on a ladder trying to fix the
light. She was holding a pair of gardening shears
when the ladder gave out. She fell back and the blade
slit her throat and she died. While at the funeral, he
was asking many of the priestly order how and why such an
event could happen. It was a difficult time. He
questioned a manichaeism rule, which is the belief in two
gods. One of good and one evil. This event was a test of
his faith. The great philosopher Soren Keirkegaard
believed that our whole life was a test of our faith. Our
lives are like a climb up a wall. As our faith grows, so
does our climb, "a progression up the wall".
But as we learn and gain knowledge, we begin to question
our faith until we finally lose our faith and quit
believing. Once we lose our faith we fall to the bottom
of the wall, or also called the "basement of
faith." We have two choices at this point. One is a
spiritual suicide, atheism. Or we can begin to re-climb.
Kierkegaard's two most famous books where, "From
Sickness unto Death" and "To Fears and
Trembling." The man who lost his wife used this
tragic loss as an excuse to take the easy way out. After
the event he crawled back into a hole and back into his
old life. His child was raised by his mother and he went
back to being out of public eye. But I say to you, don't
take the easy way out. Be a real man, (or woman). This
song was written as a cry for those to keep fighting. All
people have hard times, but it's how we handle these
situations that molds our sense of pride. The underlying
meaning is not about faith at all. But about our
societies progression towards two ideals forms of
thought. Not taking the easy way out and not blindly
following. It's sort of a battle cry. No excuses, we must
remain strong. No matter what happens, don't let life
beat ya down. If hard times knocked you down, get back
up. And through it all, you're still standing. -Sammy K |
