12/19/05 -I'm finally trying Netflix. I've heard great things about it, but have always thought it would end up being the kind of thing that you use for a little while and then forget about which ultimately causes you to end up spending more money than it's worth. I decided to try it after being reminded that the new season of 24 is starting in January and I missed Day 4. I figured over the holiday would be the perfect time to catch up. I watched the first disc over the weekend and am anxiously awating the arrival of the second. So far, so good.
12/17/05 -Helped with the Lexington Christmas bird count. It was a bit chilly, but overall a good day for birding as the sun came out around 11AM and allowed my toes to thaw.
12/16/05 -Today I had what was probably the best rueben I've ever had in my life. It was the turkey rueben at Ramsey's on High Street. Go try one.
-Saw Pride and Prejudice. Another great movie. I hope some day I find my Mr. Darcy.
12/15/05 -The new King Kong is a powerful movie. Why does the human race have to be so destructive? Don't get me wrong, I love my gadgets, but sometimes you have to wonder if technology isn't actually hurting us more than it's helping.
-You have to read this list of new holiday specials being proposed by By Larry Carroll at MSN Entertainment. It's hilarious! I'm not sure how copywright rules apply here, but since it's going around on email, I guess it's ok to post. The ones I'm looking forward to most are "The Cornelius Brothers' Christmas Adventure," "'Lost' on the Island of Misfit Toys" and "Frosty vs. Predator."
12/12/05 -Did you catch the Survivor Guatemala finale last night? Excellent! I can't wait for Survivor Panama, Exile Island.
-Narnia was excellent too. You should go see it if you haven't already.
12/9/05 -Not really much to say, but since I haven't written in a while... I'm looking forward to the semester ending, so I can resume my home improvement projects. I'm hoping to get things close to finished by the beginning of next semester and still have a little time to play some Final Fantasy and work on my recipe shopping list program.
-Having been pretty busy with class and everything, I haven't had much time to think about what to get people for Christmas. It would be great if everyone I know would make a wish list and send it to me via email. Otherwise, you might end up with some sort of strange, only thing left in the store, fruit cake. :)
11/28/05 -I figured out what was ailing my pages. Of course, it wasn't a Geocities issue. It was a RiRi Spacehead issue, actually a couple different ones. All should be in working order now.
11/27/05 -Saw Walking the Line. Good movie, superb. Also had a buffalo burger at Ted's out at Hamburg, yum. They have a whole list of specialty burger that you can order with bison or cow meat. I wanted to try the sarsaparilla, but they were out.
11/25/05 -Over the last couple days, I've done some maintenance on this site. However, most of the pages I've worked on aren't being displayed as what the code says. I don't know why this is happening. I'm pretty sure it's a GeoCities issue, so I'm just gonna wait it out and hope that it gets corrected soon. Sorry if things are a bit wacky for a bit.
11/23/05 -Every autumn, my friend Greg goes into hybernation. It's a religious thing, something about Earth descending into a dark time. I can't remember exactly. Although I obviously don't follow that (and hope I didn't just offend Greg), I have been in a kind of hibernation period this fall. I have been feeling much more like myself lately however, so am going to try to update more regularly.
- While I'm on the topic of Greg, Hi Greg!!! How are you? Thanks sooo much for the letters and birthday music. What wonderful surprises! I've been meaning to write, but since I haven't gotten around to it, I figured you would probably see this before I finally did.
- Thanks also to everyone who sent a card or email with condolences!!! It meant alot.
-And Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Even though I'm not going to Madison for the holiday, I'm still making P-Lo's super duper yummy tomato pudding. You may think it sounds strange, but it's, well, it's super duper yummy. If you like the blend of sweet and salty, you gotta try it. I know it may be too late to make for Thanksgiving, but it's also perfect for Christmas dinner. Make it, along with green bean casserole and you've got a festive Christmas dinner table.
-Speaking of cooking, I have been thinking about making a computer program which you can type in some recipes and it makes a shopping list for you. I started making one (yes, the computer programming class is going well) and then realized that I'll probably need to use a matrix. Since we just started learning arrays, I think I might have to wait a bit before I can finish the program. Don't worry, I have already been warned that non-y chromosome types like myself don't usually think computer programming is fun and that I am bordering on becoming a geek. Since I've already known this about myself for quite some time (Did you see Serenity? I was there opening night and it was awesome.), I'm not worried. Although, already being a scientist, this might be a double Whammy.
11/21/05 -If you were in Lexington this evening, I hope you saw the sunset. It was like the sky was on fire. Which reminds me, I want to see Walking the Line.
10/21/05 -Last night, as I was brushing my teeth, getting ready for bed, the fire alarm went off. My first thought, prank. My second thought, whatever. Once a month at my job, they have a fire drill and everyone is supposed to stop what they are doing and leave the building. I know they do this for a reason, but it's really annoying when you have an experiment going which you just spent $300 on reagents for and it needs to be timed pretty closely. So sometimes, people don't go out.
As I finished brushing my teeth, I contemplated whether this might be one of those times. Then I smelled smoke. Needless to say, I grabbed my cat and my coat and headed down the stairs. In the hallway, the smell was stronger. It smelled liked someone had left something in the oven too long and it was burning. Luckily, I think this was the case. Doubly luckily because the unit it was coming from was kitty-corner to mine. I know which apartment it was because I could see the firemen in there from my vantage point in the back parking lot. The crazy woman couldn't figure out how to open her window so the firemen had to do it for her. I never saw flames. Phew.
After about an hour of waiting for the firemen to arrive and then to air out the unit,we were finally let back inside. The smell was pretty bad in the hall, but not in my unit. I opened a window and went to sleep. I still don't know the whole story, but all my stuff is ok, so I'm not too concerned with it.
10/20/05 - Over the last month and a half or so, I've gained over five pounds. I can't seem to stop eating cookies. When I'm hungry, when I'm not. When I'm studying and I get stur-crazy, after every meal. Meanwhile, I keep hearing about how the morning is the best time to exercise. A friend of mine who studies circadian rhythms even said so. Now, I am NOT a morning person, but since I can't seem to get myself motivated to do anything other than napping, studying, or watching tv in the evenings, I figured I had to do something.
Yesterday, I got up an hour early, threw on some clothes and went for a walk. And after I got to work I regretted it. My lower back muscles were bugging me all morning. However, by the afternoon, they were loosening up a bit. Then, the coolest thing happened. Late in the day, I was thinking about what to do that evening and instead of feeling an immediate twinge of guilt because I knew I should get some excercise and probably wouldn't, I realized that I already had. Yes! What a relief.
Today wasn't quite as psychologically satisfying, but my enegry level is better than it has been for a while. I think I'm going to give this exercise in the morning thing a try. See how it goes. I'm hoping the next wonderful psychological breakthrough will be deciding not to eat so many cookies because I've put so much effort into exercising that I don't want to ruin it.
10/17/05 -Graduated from Beginner Lindy Hop class today. Got a diploma and everything. However, the real reason I'm mentioning this is in case you've been trying to get a hold of me on Monday nights lately and haven't been able to. Hey woman!
9/13/05 -I don't want to get all doom and gloom on here, but the bad news I mentioned previously was that my father passed away. This is the first time I've had someone really close to me die. If you've never experienced this, it changes you. Daily life goes on, but you don't see things in quite the same way. Mundane things that previously seemed important or like a big deal, don't so much anymore. For me, I find myself wanting to be the kind of person he was, and to live the life he would have wanted for me.
Time passes strangely. It seems to go by slowly and quickly at the same time. Each day seems to stretch out, but when I look back to the last entry below (for instance), I can't believe almost two weeks have gone by. The only explination I've been able to come up with as to why I've been experiencing this is that you spend a lot of time trying to distract your mind. It's too much to process and deal with all at once and the distractions leave you with a sort of "empty space" which would previously have been filled up with those mundane things. However, time keeps marching on (just like the penguins), and so when you look back, you think, geez, where did it all go?
I'm thinking about making a "tribute to dad" page. Maybe just a little something with a blurb or two and a few pix. Although judging from how long it took me to finish the RiRi Glitter story, you should probably check back for that around about the beginning of the new year or so.
9/1/05 -I'm in CA. For anyone who knows me very well, you're probably thinking bad news. If so, you're right. I'm not sure how long I'll be gone, hopefully about a week. I'm a little stir-crazy, so any kinds of distractions, emails, etc are greatly appreciated. And if you could find a bookstore in the Sacramento area that has C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structure in stock, I'll be forever in your debt. Though I've alreay tried the most likely usual suspects myself with no luck.
8/24/05 -Today I learned:
1) I couldn't get PCR to consitently work if my life depended on it.
2) The difference between a bit and a byte.
3) What syntax and symantics mean in computer programming.
4) I can get an A in CS115 if I work hard enough since the class is graded on a percentage instead of a curve.
8/23/05 -I got into CS115, Intro to Computer Programing, so I dropped Intro to Computer Science and Visual Exploration.
8/19/05 -So I lied. I said I would update, but I haven't. I've just been busy lately. And it seems that I'll just get busier because I'M A STUDENT AGAIN. I'm totally stoked about it too. UK has a special program called the Employee Education Program where all full time employees can take up to 6 credits/sememster for FREE. Right now I'm registered for Intro to Computer Science and Visual Exploration (an introductory art course). I really wanted to take Intro to Computer Programming, but it's filled up. I doubt I'll end up taking two classes. That would take up all my evenings, Mon-Thurs. How will I ever decide which one to take?
8/11/05 -You know how when you put stuff off, like filing papers, and the longer you put it off, the bigger the pile gets. And then the bigger the pile gets, the more you feel like putting it off. Well, that's about where I'm at with this blog right now. I meant to update a couple weeks ago, but never got around to it. Then a couple friends dropped a hint about updating and when I looked, I realized that it's been three weeks. Oops. But now it feels like this big daunting project. I've actually been keeping a list of stuff that I wanted to mention. It's just a matter of filling in the blanks. So now that I've said all that, I don't have time to do any catching up. But I will, promise. So in the upcoming days, check back to see what I've been up since July 16th.
7/16/05 - Man it's been a while since I updated. Been a busy, busy remodeling bee. Speaking of which, I like to call today "I hate contact paper day." If you've never had the joyous experience of working with adhesive contact paper, I recommend the non-adhesive stuff. If, however, you are determined to use the adhesive kind, there are a couple of tricks which make it easier. After about an hour of experimentation, I finally figured them out. Now I've defeated it and own it.
7/10/05 -In case you're not a sci-fi junky like me, you probably don't know that the season premier of Battlestar Galactica was tonight and it rocked. Then again, if you're not a sci-fi junky, you probably don't care.
7/10/05 -War of the Worlds was creepy. I just have one question. If the Earth begins to crack under your feet, what would you do? Hmm, let's see... I guess I would just stand there and watch until it gets really close to where I'm standing and then try to jump away .
7/8/05 -Fantastic Four was pretty fantastic.
7/6/05 - What is up with Kelly Monaco and Alec Mazo winning Dancing with the Stars? John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgensen totally should have. Whatever.
7/4/05 - Back to the single life.
7/3/05 - A couple women came over today to look at the moving sale items and want to buy almost all the stuff. I can't be more thrilled.
7/2/05 - Went dancing at the Celebration weekend in Indianapolis. What a good time! There were several great dance partners that I haven't seen in a long time. Top that off with brunch at Shapiro's with my peeps makes for a perfect weekend.
7/1/05 - I am a home owner!!! I've been crazy busy with remodeling the bathroom and moving and cleaning and haven't had time to write about this exciting news for a week.
Related to this, I'm having a moving sale. I have a bunch of stuff that MUST GO, so please tell everyone you know.
Update 11/28/05: All this stuff is gone now, so I'm disabling the link.
