3.0 SHADING

3.41 CLOTHES - ceases

Cloth is the most difficult thing to colour. You really need some good imagination of how clothes fold in real life. During your daily life, observe carefully of how folds are formed in real life.

To help you get started, I will get you do what I'd already told you to do for shading hair. That is, to copy as closely as possible to how I shaded in this pic ->

Start by creating a new layer.

Use the brush tool (50-60% opacity) to colour large area of shadow first while leaving some gaps for ceases. Then use the smudge tool for greater control of making ceases.

This same technique can also be used to create hair strand.

By the time you learned how to copy the shading I did, you should realise the technique of creating ceases on clothes. You can apply the same technique for making ceases in the future. Basically, use the smudge tool. It is much easier to create ceases with the smudge tool than just using a brush.

3.42 CLOTHES - darker ceases

Make a new layer on top of clothes shading layer. Repeat 3.31 with a darker colour. Shade the areas where not much light can get onto. These places must be within the shadow already created in 3.31.

3.43 CLOTHES - overall shading/highlight

The first two steps were only used to create ceases. The final step is to create the general high light and shadow that goes over the entire area.

For this process, use a soft edged brush with opacity set to 10-15%.

Create a new layer in between the two layers created in 3.31 and 3.32. Put the highlight and shadow on this new layer.
