On A Perfect Day...
I know that I can count on you.
When that's not possible,
Tell me
can you weather the storm?
Cause I need somebody
who will
stand by me
Through the good times
and bad times
She will always,
always be right there...
Summary:
This is probably the most personal thing I've ever written. It was a ninth grade English freewriting assignment, but soon became a very very real issue in my family. It follows the journey of a young girl into a deadly illness, through her eyes. After I had written it, it began to hit home, more than I thought it would. A cousin of mine lost his battle with Spina Bifida almost a year ago, and though I didn't know him very well, his young life touched me deeply. With the recent deaths of Aaliyah and Broadway legend Steve Barton, I find myself wondering how such young, fervent lives can be cut short. Steve Barton was, in my opinion, the best baritone on Broadway and made a name for himself as the original Raoul in the London cast of
The Phantom of the Opera; he died of a heart attack at age 47.  Aaliyah...though I was never a huge fan of hers, I had seen her Diary on MTV just a week or so before the tragic plane flight and was so impressed by her humility...her desire just to perform and be happy. It's hard to justify the death of anyone like that. Of my cousin, my great-uncle said, "It is hard for us to keep from questioning God and asking Him, 'Why?' Yet we know that He is still in control of things. God is still in the care business."
With that, I realize that we are given our time on Earth, however short or long, to make something of ourselves. Don't waste your time. You have air in your lungs and your heart still thumps in your chest. Those are all the tools needed to make something of yourself. Don't worry about what you lack, but what you have been given. Life is too precious and too short to let it pass by.
