It was two weeks until the event Hollywood would be talking about for months:
Mr. Garrett Whitley

Requests the honor of your presence at the marriage of his daughter,

Eve Meghan Whitley

To

Paul Ian Sterling, Jr.

Son of

Mr. And Mrs. Paul Sterling, Sr.

On September 20, 2002

At two oclock in the afternoon

At Divine Hope Christian Church,
28 Ivory Lane
Lexington, Kentucky
Meg had been to Dr. Harless office every month since shed been in remission, and luckily, was still cancer-free.
Shed thought.
The cramps were coming back, and her upper thighs began to become sore occasionally. It worried her, but shed prayed it wasnt cancer again.
Then shed called Dr. Harless and flew out to Hollywood for a few days, telling Paul she had to consult an Irish friend of hers about their honeymoon in Ireland.
She was devastated when the results of a pelvic sonogram came back: The cancers back with a vengeance.
Now she was on a private jet back to New York. She knew Paul would want to postpone the wedding, but it would be another victory for cancer over her life.
Her eyes filled with tears. Rob reached over and grabbed her hand. Hed come along for moral support. Itll be okay, Meg. I know it will.
Easy for you to say, she muttered.
Rob sighed. Dont give up hope. Youve beat it before, you can do it again.
Im tired of fighting it, Rob, she protested. Just when I thought I could live out my last five years happily, it comes back an slaps me in the face.
Now, now, Meg. Dont get all bitter. Things happen.
Cancer happens.
She sighed and leaned back in her chair. But why me? Why right now when everything is going right in my life for once?
Why anyone?"
