Today, the main livelihood for many
Real residents is tied to the mayors highly successful
bangus (milkfish) fishcaging
program, a
project that in the short term rescued the town many
displays sawmill workers after the total log ban was
implemented and which, later, became of the one towns
principals revenue streams. The program has been so
successful that Real is now considered a Bangus capital,
rivaling Bonoan in faraway Pangasinan, on the opposite
side of Luzon. A 15-minute motorized banca ride from
Real brings the visitor to one of many fish pens in
the bay.
Hoseas Montevilla is harvesting
bangus today from his 2 hectares plot. Montevilla
is an out-of-towner investor from Rizal Province,
one of a number of non-Real residents who have happily
plunked down millions into the industry after seeing
how convivial the Lamon waters are to milkfish productions.
On the average, Montevilla nets 600 kilograms of fish
per harvest, a profitable haul considering that a
kilo in the Manila markets fetches as high as Php120.Other
fish pens have reported hauls of 2 tons per harvest.
The harvest goes well today and is a sight to be holding,
especially for city slickers. Milkfish the size of
arms silver the air as they explode out of the water
in a losing struggle to escape the enclosing net strung
between two boats.
