WEBQUESTS

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. The model was developed by Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University.  WebQuests are a way to make good use of the internet while engaging students in the kinds of thinking that the 21st century requires.

Ecology and You
  • In this individual learning activity, you will make a brochure for a 5th grade class explaining the importance of studying ecology.  You will use the Internet to research the role that ecology plays in human society.  You will make a brochure summarizing what you have learned- at a fifth grade level. Throughout the project, you are to consider the question: Why is it important to study ecology?

Technology in Ecology
  • In this activity you will research how ecologists use satellite information to collect data.  You will then share the information with the class in the form of a brief oral report accompanied by the satellite image(s) that you found. Throughout this activity, you are to consider the question: How do satellites assist ecologists in their studies of ecosystems?

Ecological Methods of Study
  • In this activity you and a partner will use the Internet to become familiar with how the scientific studies among different ecological institutions vary.   You and your partner will then develop a table that shows the level of organization, the location, and the ecological method(s) of study that each group uses and participate in a class discussion. Throughout this project, you are to consider the question: How do different ecological institutions apply the ecological methods of study?

Biodiverse Colorado
  • In this cooperative learning activity, your instructor will assign you to one of eight groups.  Your group will use the Internet to research the different characteristics of a specific ecosystem found in Colorado with respect to biodiversity.  All of the groups will present their information to the entire class. After analyzing the information from all of the groups, you are to consider the question: What is the role of biodiversity in an ecosystem?

Regulating Population Growth
  • In this activity, you will work with the same group that you worked with to complete a presentation on one of Colorado's ecosystems.  This time, your group will be asked to write a 2-3 page paper that describes how limiting factors regulate population growth in the same ecosystem that you previously reported on. Throughout this activity you are to consider the question: How do limiting factors regulate population growth within a specific ecosystem?

Threatened and Endangered Species of Colorado
  • In this activity, you will choose and research a specific threatened or endangered species of Colorado.  You will research the characteristics and the habitat of the species.  Then, you will write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper stating the problem and offering one or more possible conservation efforts for that species.  Throughout the project, you are to consider the question: What actions can be taken to protect threatened or endangered species in Colorado?
