Introduction

As humans, our actions can have a tremendous effect on the biosphere.  For this reason, it is important that we understand ecological principles well enough to work with them.  By recognizing that human society is part of the biosphere, that biological diversity is one of the Earth's greatest natural resoucses, and that every decision that we make somehow affects someone or something else, we can begin to have a positive impact on the world that we live in.

In this individual learning activity, you will make a brochure for a 5th grade class explaining the importance of studying ecology.  You will use the Internet to research the role that ecology plays in human society.  You will make a brochure summarizing what you have learned- at a fifth grade level. Throughout the project, you are to consider the question:

Why is it important to study ecology?

The Task

At the end of this activity, you will develop a brochure that identifies how ecological knowledge has impacted human society and described role of ecology in human society.

This activity meets the following standards:

Roaring Fork School District Standards for Ecology and Field Biology:

  • 1.1.4: Select and use appropriate technologies to gather, process, and analyze data and to report information related to an investigation,
  • 6.1.1: Evaluate print and visual media for scientific evidence, bias, or opinion.

NETS Standards:

  • III A: Student use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
  • V A: Student use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

The Process

1)    Using Microsoft Word, or another word processing program, develop a brochure that addresses the following questions:

    • How has ecological knowlegde helped improve the environment?
    • How has ecological knowledge helped improve human health?
    • How has ecological knowledge helped to manage natural resources?
    • What is the role of ecology in human society? (This question will be answered by you once you have completed researching the other questions).
    • Why is it important to study ecology?

2)    Use the following web sites to begin your research on how ecological knowledge has impacted human society.

Conclusion

At the end of this activity, you should have produced a tri-fold brochure.  By completing the project, you should be able to recognize how the study of ecology benefits society and realize the importance of studying ecology.

Evaluation

Your brochure will be evaluated with this Brochure Rubric.
