Main -> Guide Archives -> New to Lanning?
So, You've never been to a lan party before? You came to the right place for the low-down; and the how to's for becoming a guru of gaming, a spectator special, a lan leecher!
No matter how many names you can create to describe lanning in its beauty, theres one thing thats always common with all lans. Its not about six figure prizes, no kids; its about extreme and grotesque voilence that you'll ever have during you life. playing with people that you could actually walk up to them, and punch their lights out after they killed you with one shot.
Ever thought about what people do after you kill their character? Such as saying playground languages, or pounding their keyboards, or laughing untill it hurts. Satisfy your hunger for pixel-blood here.
That my friends, IS lanning in a nutshell. still interested? Read on.
These are the steps for any lanner:
- Buy a PC Tote, These will simplify carring your tower up steps, down steps, around corners, and generally; you'll be able to SEE where you are walking.
- Don't bring plastic bags so you can carry your keyboard, and other accessories with you. They break easy, and they can float away with all the computer fans running.
instead, use paper bags; they may be a lil more costly. But hey, we're using trees for a good use. ;)
- Travel with friends, people you know can that can make you smile even when you "accendently fire" at the cloeset wall.

Not to mention, they can help you carry your monitor. But, make sure you carry theirs too.
- PREPARE for the worst, hope for the best! It won't hurt to have a good screw-driver, a installation disk, boot-up disk with you just in case something does go wrong. If not, other players probably will help.
- Sharpies are your third best friend. Put your name on EVERYTHING, even that black mouse pad you've got.
- Know any female counter-parts that enjoy gaming? Bring them! Make sure, they agree to go.
- Read the lan rules ahead of time, this will save you time, and money.
in addition For the longer events-
- If the event is a LONG one, say a good 2 days. make sure to sleep the day BEFORE the lan. Trust me, it'll help.
- Bring whatever you need every 24 hours; chips, water, Underarm deordent.
- be sure to bring EXTRA cash with you. There are usually alot of good sleeping/eating places around. Check with the lan party organizers for rates with the nearest hotels.
- Ask questions; If you don't know where to go, you will be searching hours trying to find the building(s)
- Portable Games! Sometimes, playing with computers can be quite taxing on your eyes, hands, neck. Bring something else to do; read, play a Gameboy, listen to the radio, play cards, etc...
