My job at Stripes is as a copy editor.  Basically, reporters from the various bureaus around the Pacific file their stories to us in Tokyo and we read their stories, make grammatical corrections and verify the facts.  We also look for any potentially libelous statements and inconsistencies.  The copy editors are also responsible for crafting cutlines (captions) for photos and checking over the galley proofs for the pages.  There are three military copy editors (those of us who are actually in the service) and the rest are civilians.  Besides myself, there's one other Navy journalist (JO2 Alan Mueller) and an Air Force guy (Staff Sgt. Rick Williams).   Also the paper's chief photographer is a Navy photographer (PH1 Jason Carter), who, like me, has been to the photojournalism school.  We get some chances to go out and shoot stories, take pictures and what not.  It's a good way for us to get practice at that part of our jobs.
