Bangladesh: The People's Republic of Bangladesh

Flag: Green with a large red circle a little to the hoist side of centre. Original flag had a golden map of Bangladesh in the red circle (see above and note it is the map I prefer). The flag has a ratio of 10:6 and the circle has a radius of one fifth of the length of the flag.

Today many try to say that the green represents the green of Islam. This is even taught in schools and espoused by many western writers but is not true. The green has nothing to do with Islam but the green mother nature of Bangladesh. (The CIA world factbook 1997 has also made the same mistake!) The red represents the blood of the martyrs spilled in golden Bangla.

Location: In the subcontinent of India, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. On three sides BanglaDesh is bordered by the India with a small portion in the South East by Burma (Myanmar or BrahmaDesh). Further East is Thailand (SyamDesh)(Bangladesh and West Bengal is the same nation. In earlier times Bangla represented a much larger area than East and West Bengal combined.)

Religion: 85% Muslim, 12% Hindu, 3% Buddhist, some Christians (mainly Roman Catholic). In antiquity Bangla (Bangladesh and West Bengal) was the original centre of Shiva Hindu and later cradle of Buddhism.

National Martyrs day: February 21st, 1952  or 8th Falgun, 1358

Flag Raising: March 3rd, 1971 (Abdur Rab, University of Dhaka) 19th Falgun, 1377

Black Night: March 25th, 1971, 11th Choitro, 1377

Independence Day: March 26th 1971, 12th Choitro, 1377

Victory Day: December 16th 1971, 2nd Poush, 1378

UN accepted Bangladesh and her flag was hoisted only in September, 1974 due to repeated vetoes by China!

Constitution: 4th November 1972, Effective 16th December, 1972, suspended 24th March, 1984 to 10 November, 1986

Current Prime Minister: Begum Khaleda Zia (Head of Government)

Current President: Iyazuddin Ahmed (Chief of State)

Legal System: Based on English Common Law

Currency: Taka and Poisha. 100 Poisha = 1 Taka (Earlier Ana was used in place of Poisha. 16 Anas = 1 Taka)
