Forget those crazy low-carb diets that
claim to help you lose ten pounds in two weeks! Here's a
sensible one that really works. Florida cardiologist Dr.
Arthur Agatston developed the plan after watching his
patients fail to lose weight on one fad diet or another.
Although the first two weeks are tough, you get to "add
back" all the foods you love, remembering just a few simple
rules. Phases 2 and 3 are just normal, healthy eating habits
-- habits that you may retain for a heart-healthy,
high-energy life. This might be the last diet you ever try!

For years, cardiologist Arthur Agatston,
M.D., urged his patients to lose weight for the sake of
their hearts, but every diet was too hard to follow or its
restrictions were too harsh. Some were downright dangerous.Nobody
seemed to be able to stick with low-fat regiments for any
length of time. And a diet is useless if you can't stick with
it. So Dr. Agatston developed his own.?i>The South Beach
Diet isn't complicated and doesn't require that you go
hungry. You'll enjoy normal size helpings of meat, poultry,
and fish. You'll also eat eggs, cheese, nuts, and
vegetables.Snacks are required. You'll learn to avoid the bad
carbs, like white flour, white sugar, and baked potatoes.Best
of all, as you lose weight, you'll loose that stubborn belly
fat first!
Dr. Agatston's diet has produced consistently dramatic
results (8 to 13 pounds lost in the first 2 weeks!) and has
become a media sensation in South Florida. Now you, too, can
join the ranks of the fit and fabulous with The South
Beach Diet.
Arthur Agatston, M.D., is a cardiologist who has
served on committees of the American Society of
Echocardiology, the American College of Cardiology, and the
Society of Artherosclerosis Imaging, where he is a member of
the founding board of directors. He lives in Miami Beach
with his wife, Sari, and their two children.

Publisher's Weekly
Despite the glitzy title, this is one of the more appealing
diet books among the new "anti-carb" programs. Agatston, a
doctor based at Miami Beach's Mt. Sinai Medical Center,
found that his patients not only were unable to stay on
various popular diets but their cholesterol and blood sugar
levels remained dangerously high after trying these plans.
The doctor chose to alter his own diet-first avoiding all
carbohydrates and fruit and then reintroducing these foods
in moderation. Feeling better and losing weight, he then
consulted a nutritionist to modify his strategy to devise a
sound method for his patients. The South Beach diet begins
with a somewhat restrictive two-week program, generally
producing a weight loss of from eight to 13 pounds. The
initial phase may be difficult for those who crave bread,
pasta and fruit. But there are still choices, and snacks
(cheese, hummus, vegetables) are a necessary part of the
diet. People shouldn't feel hungry on this part of the diet,
stresses the author. The second phase offers somewhat more
choices, including whole wheat bread and other selected
carbohydrates. Agatston advocates combining the "bad" with
the "good." For example, take whole wheat bread and dip it
into olive oil, rather than using butter. Eat a very small
amount of pasta with lots of vegetables, meat and healthy
oils. Complete meal plans along with simple recipes comprise
roughly half the book. Of course, there's no perfect diet
that works for everyone but the enthusiasm of the
conversational tone and the inviting manner make the book
more appealing than many other diet tomes. (Apr.) Copyright

Excellent!! Change your eating habits
If you want quick weight loss, the first 2 weeks of this
plan will do it. ( Phase 1) of this diet is tough though (
no bread, rice, potatos, pasta, baked goods, fruit, alcohol)
After Phase 1 you can introduce some of these foods into
your diet and the diet becomes a lot easier to maintain. I
also recommend another excellent book for permanent weight
loss called 'The Power of Positive Habits' it shows you how
to lose weight automatically!

My First & My Last Diet....
I had double bypass surgery in 1986 when I was 40. I started
watching my diet pretty carefully, but still steadily put on
weight. I took concepts from various diets, but never went
on a diet per se. Then I read about South Beach - and I made
a decision in September 2003. I weighed 194 pounds and was
leaving just before December 1st on a dream five week
vacation. I decided that before I left I wanted to be 175
pounds -- and 165 by next spring. And I decided that South
Beach was my map to that goal. On October 27th, six weeks
after starting, I was 177 pounds -- my first goal clearly in
sight a month ahead of schedule. 17 pounds lost -- waistline
down a couple inches -- neck down half an inch -- down a
full jacket size! Best of all, the first two weeks were not
at all hard for me -- and I never found myself hungry. Of
course I had already been doing a lot of what South Beach
requires, but the diet provided me with a focus. For the
first time in 13 years, my body mass index is where it
should be although near the upper end for my age and height.
And by next spring, I have no doubt that I will hit my goal
of 165 and be able to maintain my weight!

Great diet......Very flexible
I am absolutely appalled at some of the reviews I've read.
While these individuals are entitled to their opinions, I'm
guessing that they haven't read the entire book. For
example, the reviewer who says that he has to starve because
of the small portions: Dr. Agatson clearly states that if
you are still hungry, keep eating. He also has a section of
foods that are okay to eat. Pistachios are not listed in the
daily menus, but you're welcome to snack on them as needed.
Also, another reviewer stated that it's too difficult if you
work full-time. You certainly don't have to make exactly
what they say. Cook enough chicken for the next three meals
if you want. I love this diet so much, and am thrilled that
it's something I can stick to without having to follow it to
the letter, or follow the recipes every day. I create my
own. At this point, I'm just trying to make sure that I
simply avoid white flour and really minimize my sugar.
Haven't gained back a pound since!
A reviewer, very happy thanks to the diet.,

297 down to 235 in 3 months...going on...
Back a few months ago, my folks and wife all decided to go on this diet
some of my other relatives were raving about. I'm not much
for diets, as I've never found one that worked well for me,
and almost didn't jump into the mix. I'm glad I read the
book, because that changed my mind. The book is a great read
- explaining the physiology of how food interacts with your
body and how it is processed. Understanding this helps you
understand the underlying principles of the diet. I've done
Atkins, with some success. Done many other fad diets...no
luck! This seemed different right from the start. Here's a
cardiologist who accidentally wrote a diet book. So, you not
only lose weight but you lower your blood pressure and
cholesterol, as well. When I began, I was 297 lbs, with a BP
of 145/98, and pretty high cholesterol. 3 months later, with
4 weeks of phase I, and moderately sticking to phase II
since then, plus exercise (1 mi swimming 3 times a week, and
4 days a week lifting weights) I'm down to 235. Plus, my BP
is now 117/74 and my cholesterol has dropped significantly.
Yes, the exercise helps, but only doing it alone may have
dropped me 20 or so lbs. The diet is easy to do, and despite
the flack some folks seem to give the recipes, I have found
them to be ok, albeit not amazing. Lots better than some of
the junk that passes for diet food, for sure. Another thing
is, you aren't supposed to ever go hungry. So, it is FAR
better than other diets in that regard. The prep on the
meals takes a little while, and surely isn't as easy as
going out, but that's part of the sacrifice, as I see it.
A note worth mentioning - his recommendations on how to eat
out while on the diet have been tremendously helpful and
have helped keep me honest and happy on the occasions when
we've gone out. My Mom has lost nearly 30 lbs, my Dad
over 25. My wife lost 15, but had to stop, due to being a
vegetarian, and this diet not being real friendly to
vegetarians. She hasn't gained that much back since
stopping, however. I'm shooting for 215 or so, which
is the weight I was at when my wife and I met 8 years ago.
Seems very do-able at this point, whereas it seemed
impossible just 3 months, heck, even 2 months ago. Thank you
for this incredible and life changing eating plan (I still
can't stand the word diet, even when I have found one that
works well. LOL!) I would recommend both the book and the
diet to anyone who is interested in being from a little to a
lot slimmer, and who wants to live a longer and healthier
life.

I've tried them all!
I heard so much about the South Beach Diet, so I decided
what do I have to lose....well, I lost 10 lbs. the first 2
weeks, and another 5 in the next 3 weeks. I tried all those
other diets only to gain back more once I stopped writing
things down or eating from a cardboard box of prepackaged
meals! The beauty about this diet is that you do not have to
write things down. Instead you educate yourself of what you
can eat, make sure you have access to those foods, and you
will see the difference. I keep peanuts by my desk for a
quick fix and I have no desire to eat potatoes or white
bread. I also dine out at least 2x a week without a problem.
I lowered my cholesterol from 300 to 149 and expect that I
will be able to stop taking my medication based on my next
blood work result. My husband, who is an insulin-dependant
diabetic, started to eat an egg in the morning and his blood
sugar levels have improved. If for nothing else, do it for
your health!
