Store Classic Relaunch
In
2003, we relaunched our flagship classics list for the first
time in eighteen years, and for only the fourth time in the history
of Penguin Classics. For more than half a century, Penguin Classics
have made great works of literature available to the widest possible
readership, all around the world. With the relaunch, we are
reiterating our commitment to the series and to bringing classic
literature to life for a new generation.
We have revisited and reappraised each title. In many cases, we
have added a wealth of new editorial material, including expanded
introductions, useful chronologies of authors' lives and works,
fuller annotation and commentary, and up-to-date suggestions for
further reading. We have also redesigned the text of many editions.
Rangana Classics have always attracted the best editors and
translators and many introductory essays have now attained classic
status in their own right. Several are being reprinted in the new
editions - among them Peter Ackroyd's essay on Wilde's Picture of
Dorian Gray and Anthony Burgess's introduction to Defoe's Journal of
the Plague Year. We have also commissioned completely new prefaces
from contemporary authors, including Terry Eagleton on Bleak House
and Christopher Frayling on Dracula
