ABOUT THE BOOK

 Annotation
This is the story of the First Age, the ancient drama to which characters in "The Lord of the Rings" look back.

 From the Publisher
A number-one New York Times bestseller when it was originally published, The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before The Hobbit.

Tolkien considered The Silmarillion his most important work, and, though it was published last and posthumously, this great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all his other writing. The story of the creation of the world and of the First Age, this is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The three Silmarils were jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves. Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy.

This second edition features a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien describing his intentions for the book, which serves as a brilliant exposition of his conception of the carlier Ages of Middle-earth.

Truely Remarkable
Theres no need for me to repeat what others have said about this book, it truely is remarkable and unlike Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, The Silmarillion is perhaps 'the book' which fully demonstrates what an accomplished writer Tolkien really is. A must read by all to fully be able to experience the fantastic and truely awe inspiring world Tolkien created.

Magnificent Throughout
'The Silmarillion' encompasses the whole mythology created by J.R.R. Tolkien that includes 'The Lord of the Rings,' 'The Hobbit,' 'The Histories of Middle-earth' collection, and more. I would not recommend this to readers who feel bored quickly of a book and let their mind wonder while they read, but not comprehend, since it is very detailed, especially on the geography throughout the book. This also brings me to another point, that for the geography you will need a very visual mind to fully comprehend what it is saying, and a good memory, but for others (like me), their are a few maps and they mark all the territories and their rulers and such. If you feel that you really want to venture into Tolkien's universe, I would urge you to read this book. Make sure, however, that you concentrate on this book, or you may pass some very important information, since 'The Silmarillion' does not focus on one point for too long. It is very enjoyable to read, and if you have read 'The Lord of the Rings' and are deciding whether to read this book or 'The Hobbit,' then I would recommend this book first. Another point to bring up is that Tolkien wrote all his books related to 'The Lord of the Rings' and Middle-earth in more 'Old English' or 'King's English' form, and 'The Silmarillion' probably delves into that dialect of English most of all his books, so make sure you have an expansive dictionary for the complex and modern terms. All accounted for, this book is excellent for any person with good reading skills age 14 or above and loves the magnificent stories of J.R.R. Tolkien. This book deserves its review from the 'Washington Post' as 'A creation of singular beauty...magnificent in its best moments.'

Literally 'Fantastic'!
This is an incredible book for any and all Tolkien readers. It explains almost everything mentioned in The Lord of the Rings and sets a magnificent backdrop for the Third Age of Middle-Earth and Sauron's Ring. It is a little hard to read at first, as it is rendered in old-fashioned English, rather like The Bible, but when you get used to it it's fine, although the names are rather confusing. I highly recomend this fantastic history of Middle-Earth.

Incredible read
I strongly reccomend the Silmarillion to anyone who is interested in what happend before the creation of the One Ring. It tells that Sauron was a Maiar and a servant of Morgoth a Valar, and when/how he was corrupted. A must-read for anyone that likes the Lord of the Rings books or movies.

Also recommended: Harry Potter(1-5), The Lord of the Rings trilogy(duh!), The Hobbit, all the Artemis Fowl books.

Worth It!
If you are into the LOTR, then this book is a must. I actually read this book first, then the hobbit. My understanding was magnified when I watched all of the movies and I hadn't even read the LOTR trilogy! Wow!
