| Many of the trails in the Newport Ranger District cater to mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycling, off-roading (e.g., use by All Terrain Vehicles), and Nordic Cross-country skiing. Although hiking is an option on such trails, I chose not to do so. There are several more or less dedicated hiking trails in the district that offer views of the Pend Oreille River or small mountain lakes and spawning areas. Some of the trails are even wheel chair accessible. The Pioneer Park Heritage Trail features 12 interpretive displays that give a hiker an opportunity to learn about the life and times of the Kallispel Indian Tribe that inhabited the Pend Oreille River valley near present-day Newport, Washington. |
