.Roman Stripes or Sunshine and Shadows.
Page 2   ...   How much fabric and blocks will you need?

1) For the best fit on the fabric, you will need to cut your scrap or controlled color  strips 1 3/4 inches wide, selvage to selvage.

2) I have tried other widths and you have a lot of waste with any size strip more narrow or more wide when using 44 inch wide fabric.

This width of strip makes your "strip set" (five strips sewn together) come out to 6 3/4" wide with a 1/4" seam allowance.

3) This is a diagram of the 44" wide fabric, and the five cuts you will get across the fabric. You do have a little waste at the end. ( but this scrap makes a neat second quilt or binding!)  I will show you how to cut this in a later step.

Your strip set, if sewn with accurate 1/4" seam allowances, should measure 6 3/4" wide. They may be a little shorter or wider, depending on the "size" of your 1/4" seam allowance, and some take up for when you press over the seams. Yes, it doesn't sound like those things would make a big difference, but when you have four seams worth, it does.

4) This is one of those few quilts where you can have a "personal" strip size and it will work out okay.  You just want all the strips sets to measure the same width! 5) Just measure your strips set width when you are done sewing and use that measurement for cutting the part Y, or the whole wide strip for the plain half.
6) If you are using a controlled color set, you will need five fabrics.  Cut as many fabric strips as you will need for your quilt size.   (chart follows)
7)  If you are using a scrappy color set, you will just cut as many strips as you need from as many fabrics as you have. You can repeat color strips if necessary, but it really looks nice if you have many different fabrics.  Cut as many fabric strips as you will need for your quilt size.   (chart follows)
8) Hints for Scrappy:

If you are using a light whole triangle, use medium scraps.  Really dark strips in a mostly medium set tend to stand out uncomfortably, so try to stick with one color value.

If you are using a dark whole triangle, use light to medium scraps.  Really dark strips in dark full triangle tend to disappear, so try to stick to the medium and lighter color range for your scraps here.

9) Hints for controlled color strips:

Remember that a "controlled" color strip set means that the fabrics are the same fabric in the same position on each strip set.

You can go for an "Amish" color look if using a black or dark light whole triangle.

Hand dyed gradations would look stunning!

**  This all assumes that you are getting 5 blocks cut per strip set.  If you are not getting 5 blocks per strip set, you will have to adjust the amount of strips accordinately. **

11) Five different fabrics throughout quilt (controlled)
