First of all, I was fortunate enough to have a father who exposed me to a great variety of music at a very early age. The soundtrack to my earliest memories consist of James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Janice Joplin, Bob Marley, the Beatles, etc...Then MTV landed and warped my young, impressionable mind. The first albums I bought were Devo- Freedom of Choice and ,Men at Work - Business as Usual.
At this time, I was starting to blossom as a young guitar player. One of the first songs I learned was U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday. Eventually I became very interested in Classical guitar, mostly the recordings of Christopher Parkenings and John Williams, playing their own transcriptions of Mozart, Vivaldi, and my favorite, J.S. Bach. In my first year of high school, I joined a band called April House, which consisted of some great talent. We did
about everything a live band could do in a town like Corpus Christi. Soon the other members graduated and moved off to college, so I recruited some of my close friends to pick up some instruments and start a party band. We were called BlueBall. We welcomed the grunge era with open arms, playing drunken house parties with the set lists of Nirvana, STP, the Chili Peppers, some good ol'Hendrix, the Doors, and some of our own songs. Soon we all graduated and parted ways, and after a six year stint at UT, I was fortunate enough to meet up with these guys. Nowadays I listen to a wide variety of stuff. I'm particularly interested in
Beck, Gomez, and Ben Harper, as well as some local Austin bands like Subset and Spoon. But my favorite bass player of all time? Paul McCartney - no question about it!
Then came junior high, where I was simultaneously listening to the angst- ridden punk of the Dead Kennedys, Agent Orange, Black Flag, etc., and the whinings of the Cure, the Smiths, and other English groups. MTV still had its hold on me, but only in the form of a great little show called 120 Minutes.
