Nathan Walker Foster was born in Stowe, Vermont, in 1832, the son of Herschel A. Foster Sr. and Clara McGroch Foster. He was married to Maria Black of Schoolcraft, Michigan, and had three children: Edward, born 1856; Albert, born 1859 and Clarissa, born after her father's death in December of 1861.

At the outbreak of the American Civil War Nathan was residing in Kalamazoo Co. He enlisted on April 22, 1861 at the age of 26 in the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company I.

Nathan died of Typhoid Fever at the Regimental Hospital at Camp Lyon, Virginia, on November 6, 1861. He was survived by, in addition to his wife and children, several brothers and sisters, including Jordan Foster serving with the 78th New York Infantry and Herschel A. Foster Jr. serving with the 13th Michigan Infantry.

His final resting place is at the Camp Lyon National Cemetery in Virginia.
