At the outbreak of the American Civil War William was 22 years old and living in Kalamazoo Co. Mich.
He enlisted in Kalamazoo on April 22nd 1861 as Second Sergeant (2nd Sgt.) of Company I of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry as
He got into a minor altercation with Captain Bretschneider and he is arrested for it on June 4th 1861.
William found out on September 4th 1861 that he will be promoted to First Lieutenant (1st Lt) which he received on September 26th 1861. Records indicate promoted to 1st Lieut on 04 December 1861.
On December 1st 1861 Colonel Poe notifies 1st Lt Benson that he will be promoted to the position of Captain (Capt.) of Company I 2nd Mich. Vol. Inf. which he received on the 19th. Records indicate promoted to Capt on 16 December 1862.
He was in command of the provost 9th Army corp from November 1862 to February 1863.
On February 7th 1863, in at Falmouth Va., Capt. Benson resigns from the Regiment in hope to join a Cavalry unit.
