Photos of Interest

These photos are a collection of some unusual scenes. It's amazing what one comes across in one's travels. Hope you enjoy these shots.

Tree Sculpture

Treesculpture
I found this piece of tree trunk artistry at Arthurs Seat on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia - it was near the Maize Maze, an unusual maze constructed annually by the planting of corn.

Maize Maze

Maizemaze

This is the Maize Maze at Arthur's Seat. It is the largest maze ever constructed in Australia. It is on a 1.5 hectare site and takes about three months to grow from 100,000 corn seeds. It is open to the public for about four weeks - then the corn ends up as cattle fodder. The red flags are used as an aid for those who can't find their way out. I was one of those!

Historic Lime Kiln

Lime Kiln

This is a restored Lime Kiln on the foreshore at Rye on Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia. In the days of early settlement, limestone was very close to the surface on the Peninsula (in some places only 18 inches), and the lime produced from burning the limestone in the kiln was shipped to Melbourne for the building of the city.(1835 - 40)

HMVS Cerberus

The HMVS Cerberus is the only remaining ironclad monitor left in the world. Built in England in 1870 she was sent to Australia to protect Port Phillip, on which Melbourne is sited, against invasion. She rests at Half Moon Bay at the Northern end of Port Phillip where she acts as a breakwater. She has been declared an historic shipwreck but is in great danger of being destroyed for ever by the elements.

Melbourne's Winter Passion

football fans
The only thing that matters during Melbourne's winter is football. I couldn't resist snapping these two avid "Bomber" (Essendon Football Club) supporters outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground before the start of the 2000 Grandfinal which Essendon won.The number 18 painted on one of the girls' faces is the number on the football jumper worn by star Essendon forward Matthew Lloyd.

Grand Final Day
And this is where it all happens in the last week in September - the Australian Football League Grandfinal. Here we see entertainment before the start of the game. The ground's capacity is close to 100,000.
