PWFFL 2003 Awards - Part 4

[01.10.04] Kalamazoo, MI - The Puck Bowl awards have been presented and so have the player awards. Now, Salma is about to introduce the awards for best team effort. The two drunken Daves have passed out, boy are they going to have a rough morning ahead of them.

Bud Grant Award

This award goes out to the team that had the best genuine draft of the year. This team drafted smart and took players that would help their team out the most during the entire season. The Nominees are: Timbuktu Buccaneers, Kalamazoo Vikings, Rocko Bengals

Winner: Timbuktu Buccaneers

This is the second time the Buccaneers have come away with this honor. Jock seems to have a knack for finding the players in the draft that will play for him during the entire season. Timbuktu has seven players still on his team from just the draft (not including protected players) and 5 of them have played in over 6 games for the Buccaneers. With his first two picks he chose Jones (the best TE in the draft) and Pittman (the 3rd highest scoring back available in the draft and the 2nd best out of all drafted RB's). In the later rounds, The Bucs took Edinger (tied as the highest scoring available kicker) and Kennison, who started earlier in the season for the Bucs while J. Smith was suspended.

Marathon Award

Taking a look back to the draft of three years ago will help determine who wins this award. The Marathon Award is given out to the team that had the best draft in 2001 with regards to how well each player would help the team in years to come. The teams with the best three-year plan could be any of the following: Seattle, Rhode Island, and Kalamazoo

Winner: Kalamazoo Vikings

Most of the players from Kalamazoo's 2001 team are still with the Vikings in their undefeated championship season. Kalamazoo made the playoffs in each of the three years and made the Puck Bowl twice.

Bob Vila Award

The Bob Vila award goes to a very deserving team that was able to turn around their franchise and post the greatest improvement from the previous year. Part of the equation was a league-wide vote to help determine the winner. The Nominees are: Kalamazoo Vikings, W. Palm Beach Chads, and the England Teasers

Winner: W. Palm Beach Chads

Out of all the non-playoff teams from 2002, the Chads had one of the best turnarounds of the season. Adding three wins from the previous 4-10 year and 71 more fantasy points, they were only 3 points shy of 4 wins and a playoff berth. The Chads received 57% of the league vote for this award.

Barry Sanders Award

The Barry Sanders Award (formally the Coulda-Shoulda award) goes to the owner that has to be the most frustrated with his team. This team was usually in a position to win but by either coaching errors or by a surprise career game out of one of their players ended up forcing this team to come out on the losing end of the matchup. The Nominees are: Rhode Island Ridicule, Benton Harbor Hoodlems, and Northern Michigan Yoopers

Winner: Benton Harbor Hoodlems

This was a tough race, but the Hoodlems came out the winner. The Hoodlems had 5 games that they could have won. Three of those games they should have won due to having the better overall team that week. Due to coaching problems they ended up losing the week. The tie against Kalamazoo, which should have been a win for the Hoodlems, was the biggest spot on their record. They would have been the only team to defeat the Vikings all year.

We have to take a commercial break, but when we return Salma will give out the last of the awards.
