-Founder of the Bauhaus School
-Studied at the Colleges of Technology of Berlin and Munich, and later worked under the german architect Peter Behrens.
-Influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright; this can be seen in his use of flat roofs and angular style.
-Eventually settled in Boston, where he taught at Harvard and MIT, after being driven from Germany after Hitler's rise to power.
-While not responsible for the design of many buildings (the Bauhaus's Dessau campus was his one major project), his move towards building supported by internal structure and reinforced concrete allowing walls of glass, "the glass curtain," is an important aspect of Bauhaus influenced buildings.
Ludwieg Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969)
-Also studied under Peter Behrens, and studied the work of Llloyd Wright
-Director of The Bauhaus School from 1933 until its closing in 1933
-He is heavily associated with "Steel and Glass" design, and expansion on Gropius's ideas into everything from skyscrapers to administrative buildings.
-Moved to America in 1937, and became head of the architecture department at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, later renamed the Illinois Institute of Technology.
-Like Gropius with The Bauhaus, he designed a new campus for IIT.
-Much of his work is concerned with open, public, spaces. The school focused heavily on "public architecture," and Mies' IIT campus fully embodies the idea of open and public buildings.
-"Less is More." Mies work reflects this idea, especially the Farnsworth House, an exercise in minimalist design, and buildings utilizing steel and glass design.
