Introduction

This lesson was developed for Advanced Earth Science, a course offered by the Derry Area School District.

This lesson was designed to correlate to the eighth grade interdisciplinary unit on ecosystems.

In order to do this lesson in another classroom, you would need to check out the resources in the library to see if there is sufficient print material to go along with the electronic material on the web.  You want the students to know and realize that all research is not done on the internet like many of us think.

This webquest was developed to address the following Pennsylvania Science, Technology, Environment and Ecology Standards.

3.3.10A Explain the structural and functional similarities and differences found among living things.

3.5.10C Interpret meteorological data.

3.5.10D Assess the value of water as a resource

3.7.10E Apply basic computer communications systems.

4.1.10B Explain the relationship among landforms, vegetation and the amount and speed of water.

4.3.10C Explain biological diversity as an indicator of a healthy environment.

4.6.10A  Explain the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem and their interaction.

4.6.10C Analyze how ecosystems change over time.

4.7.10A Explain the significance of diversity in ecosystems.

4.7.10B Explain how structure, function and behavior of plants and animals affect their ability to survive.

4.7.10C Identify and explain why adaptations can lead to specialization.

4.8.10A Analyze how society’s needs relate to the sustainability of natural resources.

These are some of the standards that can be addressed through this project.  This webquest can be changed to meet other goals and standards for reading, writing, math, social studies, etc.
