Friends of the Prom History
Following the successful formation of similar groups at Wyperfeld
and Organ Pipes, the "Friends of the Prom" was launched by the Victorian
National Parks Association, with encouragement from the then National
Parks service, at a meeting at Tidal River over the weekend of November
17-18th 1979. More than fifty members were signed up and the first
task was a rubbish clean-up of Darby and Norman beaches. Since then
a membership of fifty to one hundred people has been maintained,
with attendance at working bees varying from five to fifty over
the years.
Check out our Contribution
In 1992 we were granted exemption from paying park fees for your
working weekends, and in November 1995 we became an Incorporated
Association for legal protection and to enable us to apply for financial
grants for our more ambitious projects.
We are an informal, friendly group of volunteers and our Annual General Meeting
is held in July around the campfire, but please remember to sign
the attendance register each time you come, for insurance purposes.
Our relationship with the rangers and other staff at The Prom has
always been a friendly and constructive one, and we hope to continue
to assist them in the preservation of the flora and fauna of this
beautiful park for a very long time.
The Friends of the Prom celebrated their 21st. Birthday in November
2000. A booklet describing the first twenty years is being produced.
In 2001 FOTP President Millie Howell won a best
friend award !
