DETAILS: Westwood studios releases
Command & Conquer: Red Alert, the prequel to their smash hit debut of the previous year,
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. This time around with
Red Alert we are told that SURRENDER IS NOT AN OPTION as we are overrun with a titillating onslaught of 30 new gameplay features (among other things) flaunting a creative effort that is above and beyond the call of duty.
When the original
Command & Conquer (C&C) was released we quickly came to realize that commanding sprites from a semi-top down perspective and sending them into battle against a devious and cunning AI was highly addictive (and also a whole lot of fun.)
Then along came
C&C Red Alert which took that one step further by throwing some wacky new structures into the mix which did stuff like zap the bad guy with bursts of high voltage electricity or created space-time dimensional shifts which instantly teleported your units into the enemy base. And as if this wasn't enough, add a heart-thumping soundtrack, stir in plenty of movies, 40 new single player missions, a heaping helping of multiplayer battle maps (and a map editor!) and it seemed that Westwood had once again cooked up an exceptional gaming experience. Not many fans of this video game genre could ask for more.
And there was no doubt by now if you hadn't heard of
Command & Conquer then you didn't know what real-time strategy was.
