9. Safer Injecting vs Chasing The Dragon *

A programme aimed at drug treatment or needle exchange workers who need to provide advice and information to drug users who inject. Looking at the historic development of needle exchange services, injecting injuries and the prevention of blood borne viruses, this course will also look at breaking the cycle of injecting behaviour.

This course will enable participants to:
� Understand the importance of harm reduction approaches in public health terms
� Identify and advise service users on injuries caused by injecting
� Teach individuals and groups how to inject safely and promote peer education
� Promote Heroin smoking as a viable alternative to injecting
� Promote Hepatitis B vaccinations and disseminate health promotion campaigns

10. Counselling Skills

This course is designed for people who want to develop counselling skills that they can use in their every-day practice. It is aimed at tier 3 workers with a key-work caseload who would like to build skills in working to promote personal change in individuals.

This course will enable participants to:
� Understand basic counselling skills and counselling models of behaviour change
� Incorporate counselling techniques into their face to face work to promote change
� Develop knowledge on the theory and principles of solution focused approaches
� Improve skills for working with resistant service users
� Practice skills in preventing and managing lapse and relapse
� Consider and reflect on their own practice
