Polymer Composites
Polymer composites have found widespread applications as structural materials for a plethora of applications. However, in many cases, the environmental sensitivity of the material proves to be a major constraint. During my undergraduate career, I attempted to the synergistic role of a number of environmental factors on glass-epoxy, glass-polyester composites and hybrid composites.
During this period, we studied the hydrothermal behavior of glass-epoxy composites with different thermal histories, and their effect on diffusion and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the hygrothermal behavior of glass-epoxy and glass-polyester composites were also considered, and the non-Fickian nature of moisture diffusion established. Finally we looked at the effect of humidity shock cycles on hybrid composites, where the presence of alternating strong and weak interfaces govern the degradation kinetics. The work done from these have been published/communicated in form of four research papers, as well presented in a couple of conferences.
