Fatigue

The propagation of a growing crack can be effectively retarded by heating a spot near the crack tip under zero stress conditions. Spot heating to a subcritical temperature at an optimal location modifies the growth behavior in a manner similar to an overload spike.

We established the role of spot temperature and location of the fatigue crack growth rate retardation. In the process, the plastic zone size was also estimated. Based on this study, we proposed a λ parameter which modifies the Wheeler model and makes it adaptable for spot heating. This work has been published in Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures.
