    Special Invitation

The membership of PRIDE would like to encourage like-minded business people to consider the entrepreneurial opportunities available in Portland.

Main Street offers some unique possibilities, long untapped but moving steadily toward realization.

Portland has long been considered a bedroom community, quiet, neighborly, an easy blending of the past and present. Since the closing of the brownstone quarries a hundred years ago, the many resources of the town have been largely ignored.

In the past few years, however, they have been rediscovered and well-received as part of our local heritage. The momentum they generate continues to grow.

PRIDE was given birth from this momentum.

A lot has been accomplished since PRIDE's inception in 1997. Main Street has steadily transformed its appearance for the better. Unsightly buildings were torn down; new ones were erected by incoming businesses. The Town government purchased the scenic brownstone quarries. Prime riverfront property adjacent to the quarries was also acquired, just a short walk from Main Street. Development continues along Main Street and along the nearby junction of Route 66 as well.

    Some entrepreneurial advantages to consider:

    • Portland is conveniently located in central Connecticut, mid-way between Boston and New York City.
    • Route 66 carries thousands of potential customers through Portland every day.
    • The Arrigoni Bridge helps Portland maintain its unique New England charm.
    • Portland has three major marinas.
    • Three quality golf courses.
    • The recent recognition of the Portland Quarries as a National Historic Landmark (just walking distance from Main Street).
    • Organizations such as PRIDE, the Brownstone Quorum, Strategic Planning, the Portland Historical Society, and many others, all contributing to the historical development of Main Street as a destination point for light tourism.
    • Membership in the National Main Street Program, sponsored by CL&P.
    • A full time Main Street Program Director!
