| Looking for Campbell Pomeroy , Edgar Pomeroy and his son Gordon. In USA. Both Campbell and Gordon were in San Francisco, (also San Francisco County) in 1930. Census California 1910 finds both Campbell and Edgar living there. Edgar and Mattie and son Gordon age 4 in Oakland township Alameda and Campbell and Leana with daughter Virginia age 7 & son Edgar Gordon age 4 in Santa Rosa Sonoma . Census 1920 Edgar is alone in lodgings in Sanfrancisco His son is living with his Uncle and aut's family in Sonoma Census is as of 1 April 1930. Chuck in Virginia provided us with the following summary: Campbell Pomeroy, age 59 (born 1871?) is living with his daughter Virginia Pomeroy McGuire age 27, Percy J McGuire age 30 Son-in-law Kathleen, age 3. Percy is head of houshold, and is renting the quarters # 2331. There is also a birth entry for them in California for a son James born 28 Nov 1931 Campbell listed himself, Father & Mother as born in England. He gives an immigration date of 1881. This is interesting because Campbell, his mother the widowed Elizabeth and Edgar, his older brother were in the 1881 English census living in Liverpool with grandfather , Augustus Stephen Pomeroy in Liscard on the Wirrell. Wesubsequently found them in 1910 Californian Census with an immigration date of 1888. Campbell's daughter ( Virginia) listed her Father as born in England and her Mother born in Virginia. No name found for Mother. Campbell listed his occupation as Salesman in Confectionery industry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Annie found just one Campbell Pomeroy on LDS site. date of birth estimated to be 1878,( Campbell born 1871) married Leana Moffatt Hanger 1898 in Virginia ; This may be an erroneous date. as she would have been 13 at the time. Leana was daughter of William Harvey Hanger and Mildred Rachel Bear, born 1880 in Churchville Virginia. William Harvey Hanger was registered to vote in Sonora California in 1890. Annie also found a reference to Lena 's father William Harvey Hanger being registered to vote in Sonora in 1890 having moved from Virginia. 1901 census California and the Hanger family are living in Sonora with Leanna who was unmarried aged 19 ,giving an aprox birth date of 1881. It is therefore almost certain that Campbel and Leanna were married in California.between 1901 and 1903 when their first child was born. Not yet found a Virginia Pomeroy as a certain match . If she was 27 in the 1930 census she would have been born circa 1903. As Campbell was a travelling salesman, and if these two are the right couple, they could well have been moving around. IGI Social Security records for Virginia Pomeroy has two in California 1) born 6 Feb 1909 died sept 1989; 2) 21 June 1905 in CA died 1978 and another in West Virginia born 2 March 1908 died 1979. The Virginia Pomeroy and Percy McGuire marriage is not in the IGI. We know that Edgar Pomeroy married in Hayward Alameda CA in 1904 to Mattie L French (daughter of Earl B French and Cornelia Bowker born about 1873 ) Gordon Pomeroy, son of Edgar and Mattie, age 24 (born in 25 Jan 1905 died I April 1969) Also found is a birth entry Campbell A Pomeroy born 27 Jan 1906 mother maiden name French. This is the same date as given for his son Gordon but Gordons record does not appear in the same record. Is this a twin who died at birth? This is Edgar Pomeroy as from the Soccar Hall of Fame site. Confirmed by Annies Aunt 90 year old Stella Ash who remembers meeting hin in about 1924 as a girl. He was founding father of Rugby in the Bay area and probabaly accompanied the team to the 1924 Paris Olympic , visisting his family at the same time. We found Edgar and Mattie with son Gordon living in Alameda in 1910 but by 1920 Edgar was alone in lodgings in Oakland and his 13 year old son Gordon was living in Santa Rosa Sonora County with his uncle Campbell and Lena and their son Gordon and daughter Virginia. This census return records that they came to US in 1888. 1930 census Gordon Pomeroy is listed in San Francisco as living alone at 620 Washington Street, San Francisco. with Rent of $22.50/month. He lists himself and Mother as born in California and Father born in England. Which means the entry refers to Gordon son of Edgar. His occupation was as a Designer, in the Furniture Manuf. industry. He in turn married and had two children. Robert and Pamela. We know that Campbell and Edgar were in Liverpool at the time of the 1881 census living with their mother , Elizabeth and grandfather Augustus Stephen in Fountains Lodge Liscard Cheshire. This was some 10 years after she was widowed. A passport application was found for Sept 1888 and the Census record gives 1888 as the year of migration . So we can now conclude that they went to California but have not found them in the 1901 census. Where were they? Elizabeth Jane Pomeroy, nee Jackson, their mother, is recorded as dying age age 62 in East Oakland CA in 1903. We have not found them aboard a ship yet but it seems probable that she migrated with her son in 1888. Another death has been found. James Pomeroy McGuire. Born 1931 died in Guanajuato in Mexico 1959 Almost certainly the grandson of Campbell . His daughter Virginia who married a Percy or Perry McGuire. I have been unable to find anything more about James . |
