This was a time of religious uncertainly after Henry VIII's Reformation. His young son became the boy king Edward VI. There was  the Prayer book Rebellion in Cornwall, Edward Seymour Duke of Somerset, Bloody Mary and her Spanish husband Phillip of Spain. It was the time of Good Queen Bess ,The Spanish Armada, Sir Francis Drake, who was living at Buckland Abbey, in west Devon, a time of pirates and privateers, a  turbulant and perilous but exciting time in Englands history.
