In medieval times the manor was the basic administrative unit. A knight had to provide not just armour, weapons and horses but food and clothing for himself and his family and his adherents. To support a cavalryman and a knight's fee, a manor needed enough land to raise tithes. England had about 5,000-6,000 knights' fees and the acreage that provided the fees varied according to the quality of the land. This was the Feudal system by which the king provided himself with fighting men. |

Sir Henry Pomeroy married Alice Raleigh, married c. 1385 in Wolstone Manor, Cornwall, England, (daughter of Sir John Raleigh and Matilda Ferrers ) d. 1462. Their children were
For most knightly families it was natural for the sons to follow in their father's footsteps. It was accepted that fees were always inherited, thus even a disabled man could hold a manor or occasionally they would be divided between daughters.
However a knighthood was not inherited with the manor. The prestige of the knight rose as the code of chivalry developed, and with it the expense of maintaining armour and trappings.

Ultimately it became easier to substitute military service with a money payment. Over the centuries this became a Tax, levied by the king to support his military enterprises and his court and his government of the country.

HEXT FAMILYLooking to discover more about Jane Hext, who married Andrew Pomeroy, and her father Digory Hext of Launceston. From Hext's family historian Jonathan Hext, I discovered that Digory was, as I suspected, connected to the Kingston Hext's. There was a Thomas Hext living in Launceston in 1573 who was probably the 2nd son of the John Hext who sold Kingstone the house near Totnes, to the Barnhouse family in the 16th century.

Sir Richard Pomeroy, b. about. 1441 in Berry Pomeroy, d. 24 May 1496, Sheriff of Devon married Elizabeth Densell, widow of Martin Fortescue.
Thomas Hext of Launceston was an alderman for the town in 1588 his name appears on the list of gentlemen who were called upon to provide the government with money at the time of the Spanish Armada -March 27, 1588 - 25.
When Richard Pomeroy died in 1496 his widow Elizabeth had the lands of Berry Pomeroy for her lifetime. These included Coffyns Heannton (Lynton) Ogewell, Churston Ferrers, Clyst Forneson (Sowton) Gattecombe in Colyton, Knighton Hethfield at Hennock, Pynesford in Asprington and Saltern at Budliegh Salterton
However the connection to Digory Hext remains unclear. Digory was living in Launceston about 1588, He married Anne Stone, daughter of John Stone of Trevigo they produced a son Thomas a daughter, Jane. In the burial register of St Thomas' church, Launceston there is an entry1586, Feb 22nd, Thomas Hecks, the son of Digorie Hecks. |
