Ash Ketchum (called Red in the game) is an ambitious trainer who is always willing to take on new challenges. Being from Pallet Town, he received his first pokémon at age 10 and embarked on his pokémon journey through Kanto, where he met many people, some who joined him in his adventures. Later, he traveled Johto and is currently exploring Hoenn with another group of people. He is always willing to help those in need and hates being humiliated by his rival, Gary. He also bumped into Team Rocket multiple times while on his adventure.

After all the detours he's taken while exploring the first two regions, his current attitude to reach his objective, the eight Hoenn gyms, is comparably much more impulsive. His excitement is so great, he just can't wait to get there, and won't take any alternate or longer route unless there's a good reason for it (such as May's Pokémon Contests). However, Jessie and James have followed him even to Hoenn, and are still trying to steal his Pokémon for their own benefit.
